Overview

Short on time? No problem. The Everest Base Camp Short Trek takes you on an adventure to stand at the base of the highest peak in the world in the quickest way possible.

The Everest Base Camp Short Trek is a time-efficient trekking adventure in the Khumbu region of Nepal, which brings you face-to-face with the world’s tallest mountain, Mt. Everest (8,848 meters). This thrilling trek is designed for those who want to experience the iconic journey to Everest Base Camp in a short amount of time. The short trek to Everest Base Camp combines the thrill of trekking with breathtaking Himalayan scenery, iconic trails, and a taste of Sherpa culture, all within a 9-day itinerary to complete this beautiful journey.

Conquering the Everest Base Camp lies on the bucket list of trekkers all around the world. However, many trekkers simply cannot plan this once-in-a-lifetime journey because of their busy schedule and limited time on their hands. That is where the Everest Base Camp Short Trek comes in clutch. The short trek to Everest Base Camp is a 9-day adventure in the Himalayas that lets you fulfill your dream of checking off the Everest Base Camp Trek from your bucket list and witness the beauty of the Everest region.

The Short (Rapid) Everest Base Camp Trek is without any rest days set for acclimatization at high altitude. Although the package is comparatively cheaper than the standard EBC Trek packages, the Rapid Everest Base Camp Trek package is proposed for those who are physically fit and have good prior trekking experience in high altitudes.

The Everest Base Camp Short Trek Itinerary begins with an instant flight to Lukla (2,860m/9,383ft), beginning your adventures right away, on the same day as your arrival in Kathmandu. The scenic 35-minute flight takes you to one of the most adventurous air strips in the world, the Lukla Airport (also referred to as the Tenzing-Hillary Airport). After landing in Lukla, you will officially begin your EBC trek journey, passing through the Sagarmatha National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), and head towards Phakding (2,610m/8,563ft), where you will spend your first night in the Khumbu region of Nepal.

On the next day, you trek to the famous hub at Namche Bazaar (3,440m/11,286ft), which is also known as the “Gateway to Everest”. The famous town of Namche Bazaar is a major trading center in the Everest region and a key acclimatization stop for trekkers and climbers. The town is also one of the last stops where trekkers can buy or rent trekking gear before heading onto their journey.

Following the trek to Namche, other key stops on the Everest Base Camp Short Trek include treks to the village of Pangboche (3,985m/13,074ft), and high-altitude settlements like Dughla (4,620m/15,157ft), and Gorak Shep (5,164m/16,942ft), before heading onto the main highlight of our trek, Everest Base Camp (5,364m/17,598ft).

Despite its shorter duration, the Rapid Everest Base Camp Trek doesn’t compromise on the core experiences. After conquering the Everest Base Camp, you will hike up to another key highlight, Kala Patthar (5,550m/18,209ft), the highest point of the Everest Base Camp short trek. It is also one of the best viewpoints to witness incredible views of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, and other Himalayan giants.

In our 9 day Everest Base Camp Short Trek Itinerary, we will walk the EBC trail for 8 days. Out of the 8 days of trekking, 5 days are set out for hiking at a slow pace, and 3 days are set for the descent to Lukla.

To accommodate the reduced number of days, the Everest Base Camp Short Trek Itinerary is carefully crafted with efficient walking hours and also an optional helicopter return flight from Gorakhep for an additional cost.

Why Do the Everest Base Camp Short Trek?

The Everest Base Camp Short Trek is a perfect package option for those who seek to complete the Everest Base Camp journey in a short amount of time, without missing out on any of the fun. This rapid trek to Everest Base Camp is ideal for trekkers having limited time on their hands.

Choosing the Short (Rapid) Everest Base Camp Trek offers a faster and more time-efficient way to experience the legendary trail to Everest, while still capturing the core highlights. The Short Trek to Everest Base Camp is also comparatively cheaper than other standard Everest Base Camp Trek packages, such as the Classic Everest Base Camp, making it a budget-friendly option to witness the beauty of the EBC trails.

However, the Rapid Everest Base Camp Trek does not have any days set out for acclimatization during the trek. Hence, trekkers must have prior trekking experience in high altitudes and maintain good physical fitness for a safe and smooth trekking experience.

Short Everest Base Camp Trek vs Standard 14-day Everest Base Camp Trek

What truly sets the Short Everest Base Camp Trek apart from the Standard Everest Base Camp Trek is the overall trek duration. The Short Everest Base Camp, as the name suggests, is shorter, consisting of a 9-day adventure in the Everest region; however, the Standard Everest Base Camp Trek is a 14-day-long journey to the base of the world’s tallest mountain.

The Short Everest Base Camp Trek is quicker, removing extra acclimatization days in Namche Bazaar and Dingboche, which the standard EBC package contains for a more relaxed journey. The Short Everest Base Camp Trek is made for those with limited time on their hands, looking for a quick trek to the Everest Base Camp. However, the standard Everest Base Camp Trek is for a more relaxing and adventurous journey with enough time to experience every small detail at the base of Everest.

Regarding the cost and accommodation, the Short Everest Base Camp Trek is a budget-friendly option, starting at only $1,190 per person, whereas the Standard Everest Base Camp Trek falls under a bit pricier section in comparison to the rapid EBC trek with prices starting at $1,490 per person.

Note: Both of these prices are inclusive of all the essential costs throughout the trek such as accommodation, food, trasnportation, flight tickets, guides and porters fees, permit fees, and more.

On the Everest Base Camp Short Trek package, the accommodation facility in Kathmandu is not included in the package itself. However, the standard EBC package provides you with a comfortable stay at a 3-star hotel in Kathmandu for 2 nights.

Regardless of no specific days set for acclimatization on the Short/Rapid Everest Base Camp Trek, at Access Nepal Tour and Trekking, we make sure you trek at a gradual pace with moderate altitude gain over the days to avoid the risks of Altitude Sickness. Your health and Safety is our number one concern.

[ Additional Note: You can still arrange accommodation in Kathmandu for an additional cost on the Everest Base Camp Short Trek package with prior notice for your ease and comfort.]

Who is the Short Trek to Everest Base Camp for?

So if you’re short on time with good physical fitness and prior trekking experiences, the Short Everest Base Camp Trek is the perfect trek option for you to complete the famous trek to the base of the world’s tallest peak.

The adventure begins immediately upon your arrival with a scenic flight to Lukla on the same day, marking your beginning of the Everest Base Camp Short Trek. However, we are very flexible and provide the trekkers with options to include accommodation in Kathmandu (if needed) for an additional charge.

The Everest Base Camp Short Trek is recommended for those who have prior trekking experience in high altitudes. The Short EBC package does not contain any acclimatization days in the Himalayas, which can be challenging for beginner trekkers. In such cases, we advise you to explore other Everest Base Camp Trekking packages such as the Standard Everest Base Camp, Classic Everest Base Camp, or the Everest Base Camp Luxury Trek, suited for all.

Food During the Everest Base Camp Short Trek

One of the essential parts of the trek is taking proper nutrition. Supporting your body during high-altitude ascent is crucial. Meals rich in carbohydrates and proteins are highly recommended. Local delicacies are not only more hygienic but also nutritionally beneficial. Our 9-day Short Everest Base Camp Trek packages include 8 breakfasts, 8 lunch meals, and 9 dinners (including a farewell dinner) during the trek, served on a full-board (main course) basis. Seasonal fruits, tea, and coffee are also included.

Teahouses provide hygienic meals made from fresh, locally sourced ingredients. A staple dish is the Nepali dish (daal bhat), which includes lentil soup, rice, seasonal vegetables, pickles, meat, and other side dishes.  In addition to traditional meals, teahouses also have other options like porridge, macaroni, spaghetti, pizza, lasagna, curry dishes, fried rice, momo (dumplings), sandwiches, Noodles (Chowmein), oats, and bakery items.

The traditional Nepali Dal Bhat comes with an unlimited refill option, making it one of the most popular dishes to consume on the trek.

Due to the location and accommodation type, food and drink prices may vary. We recommend carrying protein bars and dried fruits for extra energy.

Note: You can pre-inform us about any dietary preferences or allergies.

About Drinking Water During the Short Everest Base Camp Trek

While on trek, keeping your body hydrated is crucial for your day’s journey. Without proper hydration, there is a high chance you may feel unwell and unmotivated on your trekking journey. We strongly advise you to drink plenty of water during the trek and keep yourself hydrated. You should drink at least 5-6 liters of water daily during the trek. Keep your water bottle with you at all times and keep on hydrating your body in short intervals. You may refill your water bottles at the lodge or natural water sources along the way, which your guide recommends as safe for drinking.

We strongly advise you to purify the water before drinking it. We provide you with water purifiers so you can drink safe water. You can also buy bottled water in various shops and lodges along the way. But please note that the cost of bottled water rises as you reach higher altitudes. A liter of bottled water may cost you from USD 1 to up to USD 4, depending on the location.

We strongly advise you to carry two water bottles with you at all times. As the water purification process can take a bit of time, you can use one water bottle until the other water gets purified and is safe for drinking.

Short Everest Base Camp Trek Guide and Porter

To help you navigate trails, provide cultural insights, and maintain safety, tour guides play an important role. Similarly, porters carry your heavy weights, including your backpack and gear, making your journey relatively easier.

We, Access Nepal Tour and Treks, provide guide and porter services for the comfort of each of our trekkers. In this trek package, you’ll get 1 licensed, English-language-proficient guide for a maximum of six travelers. Additionally, we provide 1 porter for a minimum of two trekkers.

Best Time to do the Everest Base Camp Short Trek

When traveling to the Himalayan region, travelers should be mindful of choosing when is the best time to visit the Short Everest Base Camp Trek. The best time to take on the Short (Rapid) Everest Base Camp is during Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November). During this time, the weather becomes favorable, and other factors like clear skies, pleasant temperatures, and breathtaking views of the Himalayas become clearer.

  • Spring (March-May): The temperature at higher altitudes can rise to 20°C (68°F) during the day and drop to around -5°C (23°F) at night in the Spring season. Around this season, the trails are filled with blooming rhododendrons and other wildflowers.
  • Autumn (September-November): The temperature during daytime at high elevations can reach up to 25°C (77°F), while nighttime temperatures can drop to -10°C (14°F). During this season, weather conditions become stable, with crystal clear mountain views, and the perfect setting for photography.

Despite Spring and Autumn being ideal, treks can be arranged during Summer (June-August), and Winter (December-February), as trekking during these times also has their own perks.

  • Summer (June-August): During Summer, at high altitudes, the temperatures become warmer with daytime highs reaching 27°C (80.6°F) and nighttime lows around 5°C (41°F). However, the Monsoon season coincides with Summer, leading to wet and slippery trails in the lower regions. Additionally, flight delays to and from Lukla are more common due to rain and cloudy weather.
  • Winter (December-February): During Winter, the temperatures at high altitudes go up about 15°C (59°F) in the daytime. At night, the temperatures can plunge to -20°C (-4°F) or lower. Heavy snowfalls during this season make some parts of the route challenging. However, the trail will be quieter due to the cold, with fewer trekkers and pristine snow-covered surroundings.

Passport & Visa requirements

Regarding passport requirements, all visitors’ passports must have validity for at least six months from your arrival in Nepal. Also, in the passport, you must have at least one blank page for your visa stamp. We recommend that you carry photocopies of your passport in case of any emergencies or permit requirements. We would like to point out that it is mandatory to carry your passport with you at all times during the trek, as it is required for internal flights.

For visitors all around the world (except Indian citizens), you will require an entry visa. Most visitors can easily get a Tourist visa for Nepal. However, some Asian and African nationalities are required to apply for their visa in advance.

On-Arrival Visa Fee:

  • 15 Days – USD 30
  • 30 Days  – USD 50
  • 90 Days – USD 125

Note: Regarding multiple entries, if you’re planning to leave and re-enter Nepal (side trips to Tibet or Bhutan), you’ll need a multiple-entry visa that costs USD 25 extra. And we advise you to carry some cash (US or other major currencies) to pay for the visa fee. Traveler’s cheques are not accepted.

Your Visa can be obtained at Nepalese Embassies or Consulates in your home country or on arrival in Kathmandu. But we strongly advise you to fill out an online visa application for faster visa processing and avoid delays. You can apply through the Nepal Immigration Website before your arrival to save time at the airport.

Regarding Visa Extension:

You always have the option to extend your visa at the Department of Immigration in Kathmandu. A 30-day visa sufficiently covers the trip duration for most of our packages available.

For more information regarding the Visa and Passport requirements, stay updated on any new changes in rules and regulations from the Department of Immigration site.

Permits Required for the Short Trek to Everest Base Camp

Our team at Access Nepal Tour and Trekking will obtain the necessary permits required for the trek on your behalf. You do not have to worry about the cost of these permits, as it is already included in the cost of the package. No extra payments are required to obtain them from your side.

Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit

The Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit costs NPR 3,000 (USD 23) per person for foreigners, NPR 1,500 (USD 11.50) per person for SAARC nationals, and NPR 100 per person for Nepali citizens. Children below 10 years of age do not require permit fees. You can obtain this permit at the Nepal Tourism Board Office in Kathmandu or at the entrance of the Sagarmatha National Park entry gate in Monjo.

Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit

Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit costs NPR 2,000 (USD 15) per person for foreigners and NPR 1,000 (USD 7.50) per person for SAARC nationals. This permit must be obtained at the Rural Municipality Office in Lukla or at the Monjo checkpoint at the Sagarmatha National Park entry gate.

You must have your passport as the necessary document for obtaining the permit. It is also important to note that there aren’t any alternative offices from where you can obtain this permit in Kathmandu, and it must be obtained in the Khumbu region. This recent permit was introduced to replace the TIMS card in the Everest region.

To obtain the Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit, you can visit either of these offices:

  • Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation office in Kathmandu
  • Sagarmatha National Park counter in Monjo.

On the other hand, the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entrance Permit can be obtained from either Lukla or Monjo.

Necessary documents required for Entry Permits include:

  • Valid passports with a validity of at least 6 months from the date of arrival
  • Two passport-sized photographs
  • Nepal entry visa (for international visitors)

These permits are valid up to 4 weeks. You can also extend the duration if you want to by paying extra costs.

Nepalese Currency for Extra (personal) Expenses

We highly advise you to carry extra cash for your expenses. It is recommended that you carry the cash in Nepalese rupees from Kathmandu itself, so that you get a fair exchange rate. The amount of money to carry with you depends on your spending habits. However, we suggest you carry cash in Nepalese rupees equivalent to USD 15 to 20 per person, per day.

During the trek in high altitudes, ATMs are not reliable for withdrawing cash. That is why you should come prepared and carry some Nepalese currency for any emergencies or personal expenses during the trek.

Health and Safety Concerns for the Short Everest Base Camp Trek

Our top priority during the whole trek, starting from your arrival in Kathmandu up until your departure, is your safety. Our trek plans and packages that we offer are carefully prepared by experts and experienced guides who know the routes very well and all the dangers along the journey.

In terms of first-aid and emergency check-ups, our well-trained guides are very capable of performing basic first aid and have over decades of experience and training for any emergencies and health concerns one can face during such adventurous treks.

If in any case, you start to feel unwell with Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) or any other health concerns and need to get to a lower altitude, an assistant guide will go along with you to check up on you. If your health improves and you start to feel better, you can rejoin the trek, but if not, we will arrange for you to be escorted back to Lukla or Kathmandu for proper medical care and treatment.

Your health and safety are always our main concerns that we look out for.

Travel Insurance During the Short (Rapid) Everest Base Camp Trek

Our team highly recommends getting your travel insurance before taking on the Short Everest Base Camp Trek. Your insurance will cover any medical evacuation and other travel issues that may occur during the trek.

Nothing is certain when it comes to nature. Nature can get quite unforgiving at times, and while you will have the best of the guides with the best pieces of training along with you, there are always risks and dangers of nature lurking around. For these reasons, travel insurance can be a lifesaver.

Everest Base Camp Short Trek Difficulties

During the Everest Base Camp Short Trek, trekkers may face various difficulties. The Short (Rapid) Everest Base Camp Trek is a 9-day journey in the Himalayas. Trekking in high altitudes can pose threats if proper precautions are not taken.

Here are some of the difficulties trekkers can face during the Short Trek to Everest Base Camp

1. Altitude and Acclimatization

The Everest Base Camp Short Trek starts at Lukla (2,840m) and climbs to Everest Base Camp (5,364m), with Kala Patthar (5,550m) as the highest point. These are extremely high altitudes that require careful preparation and physical fitness to complete the trek smoothly.

Unlike the other Everest Base Camp Trek packages, the short Everest Base Camp Trek does not include days for acclimatization in the Himalayas to make the trip time-efficient. Rapid ascent in a short itinerary means less time for acclimatization. This increases the risk of Altitude Sickness.

2. Long Trekking Days

To make the Short Everest Base Camp rapid, the itineraries are crafted in a way to cover more ground in less time. Unlike the standard EBC packages with plenty of rest and short trekking distances, the short trek to Everest Base Camp compresses the schedule, making daily walks last about 6 to 8 hours on average, sometimes even longer.

Such long trekking days can exhaust trekkers and could make them feel unmotivated.

3. Weather Fluctuations

The weather in the Himalayas is not that predictable. Even during the peak seasons (Spring and Autumn), the weather in such high altitudes can change rapidly. Sudden snow or powerful winds can occur above 4,000 meters, making it quite difficult for trekkers to continue their journey.

There are also chances of flight delays into and out of Lukla due to the sudden change in weather, creating fog or wind.

4. Trekking Pace

Another major difficulty trekkers can face during the Short Trek to Everest Base Camp is the overall trekking pace. The Rapid Everest Base Camp Trek is crafted in a way to cover more distance in less time to reduce the total length of the trek. This can, in result, turn out to physically strain the trekkers if not for proper training and preparation.

Trekkers will hike for around 6 to 8 hours a day on average, covering more ground than in the standard Everest Base Camp Trek. This can turn out to be tiring for some inexperienced trekkers and prove to be difficult.

Everest Base Camp Short Trek Preparation and Training

The Everest Base Camp Short Trek is an adventure that ranges from moderate to challenging, based on your fitness level and previous trekking experience. This trek is perfectly suitable for travelers of all ages with the right preparation and training. One of the main risks of trekking at a higher altitude is high-altitude sickness, which requires effective physical and mental preparation.

Thereby, to make the trek comfortable and easy, we suggest that you get involved in preparation 2-3 months in advance. These include:

Physical Training: Involve in activities like:-

  • Gym sessions
  • Cardio activities such as running, cycling, taking the stairs, or hiking to boost endurance.
  • Involve yourself in yoga and swimming to increase flexibility.

Mental Preparation: To build mental resilience and determination, you need to perform

  • Mindfulness practices
  • Deep breathing meditation sessions

Other Key Things to Remember:

  • Walking at a normal pace
  • Drinking enough water

Altitude sickness or Acute Mountain Sickness can be triggered in high altitudes (generally higher than 2400m/7874ft) where there is less oxygen than in lower altitudes. It happens when you ascend to a great height in a short time before your body can adjust to the change.

Symptoms that take anywhere between 6 hours to a few days to develop include severe, persistent headache, coughing, pressure in the chest, shortness of breath even while at rest, dizziness, tiredness, loss of appetite, and others. The illness may cause a medical emergency, especially when the condition worsens to High-Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE) or High-Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE).

The Everest Base Camp Short Trek is a 9-day journey with no days set for acclimatization in the Himalayas. This can be a tough challenge for trekkers with no prior trekking experience or good physical fitness. Trekking in the high altitude regions with no acclimatization days can prove to be dangerous for beginner level of trekkers with risks of Altitude Sickness.

Remedies for Altitude Sickness

Here are some of the remedies to prevent Altitude Sickness during the Everest Base Camp Short Trek:

  • Stay hydrated. Drink frequently in small quantities before the onset of common symptoms of dehydration, which include thirst, dry lips, nose, or mouth, headache, and fatigue.
  • Make sure you eat well, ensuring at least a light meal (soup or others) when you lose your appetite, which is a common occurrence in high-altitude regions.
  • Follow your guide’s instructions and monitor your body’s responses to the cold and altitude.
  • Acclimatize properly and take rest days when necessary.
  • Stay clear of smoking and alcohol consumption at all costs.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise.
  • Take a first aid kit containing medication for altitude sickness and other common illnesses.
  • Medication like Diamox may be taken before the trek upon consultation with your physician.

Everest Base Camp Short Trek FAQs
General Trekking Information

What are the difficulties during the Short Everest Base Camp Trek?

If you’re someone who lacks trekking experience in high altitudes, you may face quite a few difficulties during the Short Everest Base Camp Trek. The Short Everest Base Camp Trek is a challenging 9-day journey with no days set for acclimatization, unlike the standard Everest Base Camp Trek packages.

One of the major difficulties faced during the Short (Rapid) Everest Base Camp Trek is the lack of acclimatization at high altitude. The Everest Base Camp Short Trek is a quick journey to the base camp, completed under 9 days, with no acclimatization days set for trekkers. This can cause difficulties for inexperienced trekkers, with risks of Altitude Sickness.

Another difficulty one can face during the Short Everest Base Camp Trek is the trekking pace. To make the Short Everest Base Camp trek rapid, trekkers have to cover more distance trekking in comparison to the standard EBC treks, which can cause exhaustion and demotivation.

Physical demands and limited time for recovery also fall under some of the difficulties trekkers face during the Short Trek to Everest Base Camp. The Rapid EBC Trek requires excellent physical fitness because of longer trekking hours per day to cover more ground. Also, with a tighter schedule, there is little flexibility for rest and recovery, which can raise issues.
