Overview

“Everest Base Camp Trek- 14 Days: A Route to the Shadow of Everest”

The Everest Base Camp Trek is one of the most popular trekking routes in the world. Many people dream to do it once in a lifetime because the Everest Base Camp Trek is the best chance to stand in the shadow of Mount Everest, the highest peak on Earth at 8,848.86 meters (29,031.7 ft). According to the Nepal Tourism Board, there are approximately 40,000 trekkers visit Everest Base Camp annually. Since, this trek takes you to the base of the highest place of the earth, it will be challenging. The trekkers have to prepare themselves not only physically but also mentally. However, all these challenges are worth because it’s the best opportunity of experiencing a new culture and absorb yourselves in nature and the heart of the Himalayas.

Our journey to Everest Base Camp starts from Kathmandu to Lukla Airport. This flight is popular as a thrilling 45 minute flight. Known as one of the most exciting airstrips in the world, this flight takes us straight into the heart of the Everest region. It is also popularly known as the Khumbu region. The Lukla, starting point of Everest Base Camp Trek is located at the altitude of 2,840 meters (9,317 feet). As we approach Lukla, we will be treated to gorgeous aerial views of the Himalayas. This part is a breathtaking introduction to the adventure ahead. This makes you curious about the flight experience right? Check out our blog for everything you need to know about the Lukla flight.

Lukla, often called the gateway to Mount Everest, sets the tone for the trek with its sparkling energy and natural beauty. This gives you the great opportunity to escape from city life to nature. The Everest Best Camp Trek spans approximately 130 kilometers (80 miles) round trip and takes 14 days or more depending on your pace and acclimatization needs.

After landing at Lukla, our remote Lukla to Everest Base Camp Trek begins. Following the trail and crossing a few suspension bridges over the Dudh Koshi River we will walk through some of the breathtaking landscape views of Everest Base Camp route. Our long hike towards the elevation of 2,610 meters (8,562 ft) takes us to Phakding where we will be spending our first night and then to one of the most heard landmarks, Namche Bazar at 3,440 meters (11,286 ft) where we stop for acclimatization. Passing through the Pine and Rhododendron forest and crossing the famous Hillary Suspension Bridge, this gentle two days trek leads us to the entrance of Sagarmatha National Park where our permits are checked.

Leaving Namche Bazar, our trek ascends gradually, taking us deeper into the Khumbu region. The trail offers incredible views of snow-capped peaks of Ama Dablam, Nuptse, Lhotse, and Mount Everest itself. As we go higher, our journey leads us to Tengboche at 3,860 meters (12,664 ft), a traditional Sherpa Village and home to the famous Tengboche Monastery at 3,867 meters (12,687 ft). The monastery, set against the stunning backdrop of Ama Dablam, offers a serene moment to reflect on the grandeur of nature and immerse in its Buddhist traditions.

From Tengboche the trail is relatively easy, taking us through beautiful slopes of alpine grasslands and yak-grazed fields to Dingboche. Dingboche is a picturesque village which is situated at the elevation of 4410m (14,470ft) and is a perfect stop for acclimatization. This village also offers a good view of the Nuptse and Lobuche peaks and it also provides an option of doing a few short hikes to Nangkartshang Peak or Chukhung. These side hikes provide some of the most stunning views of the Imja Valley helping trekkers adjust to the increasing altitude ahead.

On the way to Dingboche, we pass through Pangboche, home to the historic Pangboche Monastery, which dates back to the 16th century. Pangboche offers a rich and exceptional Sherpa culture and their simple daily life making it another hub for culture enthusiasts.

Following the Khumbu Glacier, the trail leads us past Pheriche village. Throughout this trail we get to enjoy the incredible views of Pumori, Lingtren, and Khumbutse mountains. The trek continues towards Lobuche at 4,940 m (16,210 ft) and takes us towards Gorak Shep, the last settlement before reaching Everest Base Camp, located at 5,164 m (17,598ft). As we get closer to Gorak Shep, the terrain gets more rocky, with an almost deserted landscape, striking-yet serene contrast to our earlier routes. It is important that we continue our journey here after with a  slower pace and long breaths to adjust with the altitude.

Finally, our trek leads us to the moment of triumph trekking to Everest Base Camp at 5,364 m (17, 598 ft). Reaching Everest Base Camp is certainly a rewarding moment for every trekker after a challenging trek through the Sagarmatha National Park. The Everest Base Camp trail follows the Khumbu Glacier and yields fabulous views of Mount Everest and its surrounding peaks, but our adventure is not limited just here. This journey is incomplete without an early morning hike to Kala Patthar, which is the highest point on the trek at 5,555 m (18,208 ft), thus providing an unparalleled view of a golden sunrise over the Himalayas-a memory that etches itself in our mind forever.

Descending back our journey retraces us through Gorak Shep, Lobuche, Dingboche, and Namche Bazar. Our Everest Base Camp trek itinerary concludes at Lukla, offering an opportunity to savor the sights, sounds, and cultures once more. The overall trek concludes with a celebratory meal in Kathmandu, where our whole adventure is relieved in our stories and laughter.

When is the Best Time to Visit Everest Base Camp Trek?

When traveling to the Himalayas region, travelers should be mindful of choosing when is the best time to visit Everest Base Camp Trek. The best time to trek to Everest Base Camp Trek is during Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November). During this time, the weather becomes favorable, and other things like clear skies, pleasant temperatures, and breathtaking views of the Himalayas.

    • Spring (March-May): The temperature at higher altitudes can rise to 20°C (68°F) during the day and drop to around -5°C (23°F) at night in Spring season. Around this season, the trails are filled with blooming rhododendrons and other wildflowers.
    • Autumn (September-November): The temperature during daytime at high elevations can reach up to 25°C (77°F), while nighttime temperatures can drop to -10°C (14°F). During this season weather conditions become stable, crystal clear mountain views, and the perfect setting for photography.

Despite spring and autumn being ideal, treks can be arranged during summer (June-August), Winter (December-February), and other times also.

    • Summer (June-August): During summer, at high altitudes, the temperatures become warmer with daytime highs reaching 27°C (80.6°F) and nighttime lows around 5°C (41°F). However, the monsoon season coincides with summer, leading to wet and slippery trails in the lower regions. Additionally, flight delays to and from Lukla are more common due to rain and cloudy weather.
    • Winter (December-February): During winter the temperatures at high altitudes go up about 15°C (59°F) in the daytime. At night the temperatures can plunge to -20°C (-4°F) or lower. Heavy snowfalls during this season make some parts of the route challenging. However, the trail will be quieter due to the cold with fewer trekkers and pristine snow-covered surroundings.

      Altitude and Acclimatization

The trek involves significant altitude gain, reaching a maximum of 5,555 meters at Kala Patthar. Acclimatization stops in Namche Bazaar at 3,440m and Dingboche at 4,410m are critical to avoid altitude sickness. Trekkers are advised to hydrate well and ascend slowly to adapt to the thinner air.

Climbing Mount Everest is challenging and requires immense training but reaching Everest Base Camp at 17,598 feet (5,364 meters) is possible for people with varying fitness levels. The trek usually takes 12 days and covers about 80 miles (130 km) round trip from Lukla. Our Everest Base Camp Trek is budget-friendly and great for anyone who wants to see the world’s highest peak at a low cost. But if you want more comfort, our standard Classic Everest Base Camp Trek has special deluxe features like an Everest base camp helicopter tour, a standard 4-star hotel, and many more.

Apart from this, there are no other hidden charges.

The adventure begins with a short (30-35 minute) flight to Lukla from Kathmandu or Ramechap, followed by the trek on foot to base camp. If you want a longer adventure, consider the Everest Base Camp by Road, Everest Three Passes Trek or the Everest Base Camp to Gokyo Trek.

Additional Note: To avoid altitude sickness, we follow the “Climb High, Sleep Low” rule to prevent altitude sickness. Along with acclimatization days at Namche Bazaar and Dingboche, we include short hikes to higher altitudes during the day and return to lower altitudes to sleep. This helps your body adjust safely.

Everest Base Camp/Chitwan/City tour May 2024 • Solo Very responsible company. He contributed greatly to the success of the trip. From the first contact, always trying to provide the best possible service, excellent hotel chosen with good structure. Great guide, very safe throughout the itinerary. There was bad weather forecast on the itinerary and we had to advance the walk and we managed to get a good view of Everest on the way up Kalapatthar. Perfect itinerary, no surprises! I did the safari in Chitwan and everything was fine, the resort structure chosen was sensational and the tours were great. Excellent city tour passing through the main attractions of Kathmandu. I highly recommend the company!

Everest Expedition Jun 2024 • Couples We decided to face an adventure that we had long planned to do. In June 2024 we climbed up to the Everest Base Camp (5364 m), passing Kalapatthar, about 5500 m. The challenge was only possible due to the excellent work done by the Agency Access Nepal, which in addition to organizing the entire expedition, encouraged us throughout the journey to complete the accomplishment. The presence, guidance and support of the Subodh Tamang guide and the Nirat loader were essential for the success of the adventure. The support of Sadhana, who was at the forefront of all the planning, was also very important. I highly recommend this agency!!! Note 10.

Friendly, great service, great value for money, speak good English, earthquake had no impact on our trip Oct 2015 • Friends From the moment we landed they took complete care of us. All we had to do was turn up and they sorted everything else. They took care of all the admin required for activities, so the whole three week holiday was a care free experience. Even with a fuel crisis, and one days notice from us, they managed to organise a private car to take us on a six hour round trip allowing us to go white water rafting. I would also note that the earthquake has had no impact on the service/packages provided by Access Nepal. Talking to other trekkers it seems that many people use the big western trekking companies to organise their holidays. In reality these trekking companies act as management agents who then go to companies such as Access Nepal to do all the work. Access Nepal will offer the same service/accommodation/facilities as the western companies. Having book with Access Nepal directly I am more than happy to recommend that others do the same. Save yourself some extra spending money and support a domestic business.

Superb trip thanks to Access Nepal Oct 2015 • Friends The team at Access Nepal are fantastic and made the trip completely stress free. From booking the trip while back in the UK to being collected from the airport and taken to our Hotel everything was thought of and taken care of smoothly. We did a 4 day Safari in Chitwan, the 14 day EBC Trek and on returning to Kathmandu asked Sadhana to organise some white water rafting for us. This was organised at less than 24hr notice and was a really great day trip with a private driver and 4hrs of very good rafting. The safari and the trek were both perfectly organised. All door to door transport and excellent accommodation (much better than many of the other trekkers we met) were sorted. The team also made sure we had all the correct gear and were happy to lend us anything we didn't bring. The guides and porters were absolutely brilliant. They speak excellent English and were great guys. They know how to make sure you get the most out of the trekking and make it all the way and when not guiding us most of our evenings were spent drinking tea and playing cards with them. I can't recommend these guys enough and would absolutely use them again if returning to Nepal.
