The major highlight of this Gokyo Lake trek is reaching Gokyo Lakes, the highest freshwater lake system in the world. Located at an altitude of 4,700 to 5,000 m, they are known for the deep blue and turquoise hues water color. The five Gokyo Lakes are Dudh Pokhari (42.9 ha/ 106 acres), Thonak Cho (65.07 ha/ 160.8 acres), Gyazumpa Cho (29 ha/ 72 acres), Tanjung Cho (16.95 ha/ 41.9 acres), and Ngojumba Cho (14.39 ha/ 35.6 acres).
The local Sherpa people believe this lake is a sacred site. Likewise, many devotees from all over Nepal during the Janai Purnima Festival in August visit to perform rituals. The sunrise view where sunrays shower all over, creating a view of shimmering glaciers, and a golden hue all over the mountains is the cherry on top experience.

It is even better the view of Everest from the Everest Base Camp, which is visible between the small gap of Mount Lhotse and Nuptse. The Gokyo Valley Lake Trek is ideal for those who want to see Everest from a different angle.

Best Time to Visit the Gokyo Lake Trek
The best time for the Gokyo Lake Trek is spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). They are the peak season for trekking all over Nepal. Spring and Autumn weather are the most favorable for trekking because of the stable weather. Likewise, great visibility, clear blue skies, and pleasant temperature makes it more enjoyable.
Spring (March to May):
In the spring season, the temperature gets warm and pleasant for trekking. On average, the day temperature goes up to 20°C (68°F) and at night, it will go down to -5°C (23°F). The best part of trekking in spring is the colourful trails. Rhododendron forests and wildflowers will be in full bloom and dot the whole path like a beautiful flower garden. It also provides great visibility of the surrounding mountains and skies.
Autumn (September to November):
Autumn is the peak season for the trek to Gokyo Lake. Starting from September to November, the temperature becomes pleasant. The weather becomes more stable, with dry trails and blue skies. Since it starts right after the monsoon, the fresh and crisp mountain air makes it more suitable for trekking. During the daytime, the temperature rises up to 25°C (77°F) and at night, it will go down to 10°C (14°F). Most of all, it’s also the season of festivals. Nepali people will be celebrating their major festivals, Dashain and Tihar. You can take it as an opportunity to know more about the people living here.
The seasons to avoid trekking in Nepal are the monsoon season (June to July) and (December to February). During monsoon, there will be rain, and in winter, harsh cold temperatures make it difficult. However, you can also do the Upper Mustang Trek in summer. However, if you are looking for a little bit of a challenge, trekking is still possible. If you are good at cold and winter, the treks are still manageable. Trekking is operated all year round at Access Nepal. Therefore, if you are interested, we can help you manage your adventure.
How to Get Ready for the Gokyo Lake Trek?
For the successful Gokyo Lake Trek, we suggest you start doing exercises 1 or 2 months ahead. Because of lots of steep climbing, descending, and elevation challenges, your body should be ready physically and mentally. Therefore, to enhance your strength and endurance level, you can do exercises like swimming, cycling, hiking, cardio, and running. These types of exercises are very helpful to increase muscle strength and stamina.
Similarly, one must not forget that part is bringing the right trekking gear and equipment. Choose good and high-quality trekking boots, waterproof jackets, warm clothes, outer layers, gloves, and sunglasses. Even if they are expensive, don’tb hesitate. Because for their safety, it’s a good investment.
Additionally, altitude sickness is another concern during the Gokyo Lake Trek. Therefore, acclimatization is the key to preventing it. During the trek, drink lots of water, walk slowly, eat healthy food, and avoid alcohol/cigarette intake. If you have any medical or health issues, consult with your doctor if you are fit for doing the trek or not.
How is the Gokyo Lake Trek Itinerary Planned?
Keeping safety as a top priority, the Gokyo Lake trek itinerary is prepared very carefully. Don’t be concerned about continuous walking because our itinerary also includes enough days to rest and acclimatize. Our itinerary is prepared to prevent altitude sickness and give you a good rest.
In our 13-day itinerary, we have two acclimatization days, one at Namche Bazaar (Day 4) and another at Gokyo Valley (Day 8). These rest days are included before jumping to a big elevation gain. The acclimatization days help your body adapt to high altitude. With our expertly designed itinerary, you trek with peace of mind and comfort. You can enjoy the beautiful Everest region and Gokyo Lakes without any rush.
How Hard is the Gokyo Lake Trek?
The Gokyo Lake Trek difficulty is a moderate-level trek. This trek is suitable for both beginner and experienced level trekkers. However, if you are a beginner planning to trek to Gokyo Lake, Nepal, you have to prepare yourself. After good training and preparation, you can complete the Gokyo Lake Trek easily.
For the preparation, we recommend that you start training 1 or 2 months prior. The trek will be quite demanding because you have to walk for 5 to 6 hours daily on average. The route also follows lots of ascents, descents, and rough terrain.
Most of all, the main challenge is altitude sickness. The highest point of the trek is Gokyo Ri altitude (5,357 m/ 17,575 ft). The higher you climb thinner the air gets and the greater the chance of getting altitude sickness.
Before going for a trek, it’s essential to prepare yourself physically and mentally. Otherwise, with zero preparation, the success rate is low.
How to Avoid Getting Altitude Sickness?
During the Gokyo Lake trek, elevation gain is your major concern. The highest point of this trek is Gokyo Ri at 5,357 meters, and the Gokyo Lakes are at 4,750 meters. At an altitude over 3,000 m, the oxygen level drops and increases the risk of getting altitude sickness. Therefore, if you feel any of these symptoms, like weakness, headache, dizziness, and nausea, immediately seek help from your guide. If you feel any of those symptoms, you have to come down to a lower altitude.
If it gets too late, it can become life-threatening. Don’t worry, your guide will always be with you, and in case of emergency, immediate action to get medical help will be taken.
Furthermore, for your safety, Access Nepal Tours follows the “Climb High, Sleep Low” rule. This means adding acclimatization days at Namche Bazaar (3,440 meters) and Gokyo Valley (4,750 meters), before moving forward to high elevation. This will help your body get familiar with altitude.
Some of the tips to prevent getting altitude sickness are:
- Do not rush and walk slowly.
- Drink enough water (3 to 4 liters a day).
- Do not consume alcohol and cigarettes.
- Eat healthy, nutritious food and rest properly.

However, unpredictable weather condition, location of the airport, altitude, and air traffic in peak seasons causes flight delays and cancellations. These types of obstacles disrupt the itinerary and schedule. Therefore, to avoid any of these bad circumstances, Access Nepal will help you in rescheduling.
Peak Season Flights (March, April, May, October, November):
To avoid air traffic and flight delays, the Lukla flight will operate from Ramechhap/ Manthali Airport. The Manthali to Lukla flight will be operated during the peak seasons, March, April, May, October, and November. However, to reach Manthali Airport, you have to take a 5 to 6-hour drive from Kathmandu. Since the Lukla flight typically works early in the morning, to catch the flight, you have to wake up between 1:30 am to 2:30 am. You will be transported by a staff member from Access Nepal in a tourist bus.
After reaching Ramchehhap airport, you have to board a 20-minute flight. If you find this schedule difficult, we advise you to add another day and travel to Ramechhap a day ahead.
Off-Peak Season Flights (January, February, June, July, August, September, December)
The flight will operate normally from Kathmandu airport during the off-season, January, February, June, July, August, September, and December. However, prepare yourself for the last-minute changes because of weather or air traffic. In off off-season, flights are also limited, and you will also get little room for flexibility. If the flights get limited or the schedule doesn’t fit you, we can help you arrange a helicopter flight at an additional cost. The prices may fluctuate and vary depending on availability.
Note: The Lukla flight has weight limit of 15kg including the both luggage and handcarry bag. It the weight exceeds the limit, you have to pay extra.

The starting point of this journey is after you arrive in Kathmandu. You will rest for the night, and the next morning, you will take a thrilling flight to Lukla. After a 30-minute flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, the real adventure starts. From Lukla, you will trek for 4 to 5 hours, until reaching Phakding, a small Sherpa village.
On your third day, you will trek to Namche Bazaar, a popular Sherpa town and also a gateway to Everest Base Camp. You will stay for another night in this town as a process of acclimatization. During your rest day, you will go for a short hike to the Everest View Hotel, the world’s highest hotel.
Moving forward, the Gokyo Lake trek route takes you to Phortse Thang and then to Machherma. Though the continuous walk for two days might be quite challenging, the surrounding views and atmosphere make it worth everything.
On your 8th day, you will trek to Gokyo Valley to see the main highlight of this trek. You will explore and visit the Gokyo Lakes. The following day, you will hike up to the Gokyo Ri (5,483m), the highest point of the trek. This viewpoint is popular for panoramic views of the mountains, Gokyo Lakes, and Ngozumpa glacier. The peaks you will get to see from here are Mount Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, and many more.
The next part of this route is the return journey. From Gokyo Valley, you will trek to Dole, passing through the Khumjung village. From there, you will walk down towards Namche Bazaar, Lukla, and Kathmandu, ending your Gokyo Lake Trek successfully.
Other alternative routes to Gokyo Lake are the Gokyo to Everest Base Camp Trek via Cho La Pass and the Everest Base Camp to Gokyo Trek.

We want to give you the best experience with no compromises. We want you to travel in peace, as your safety will be highly prioritized.
Travel Insurance During the Trek
Travel insurance is mandatory for the Gokyo Lake Trek. Because of high elevations, rough trails, health concerns, and harsh weather, trekking becomes risky. All the trekkers traveling to the Gokyo Lake Trek require travel insurance. For the note, your insurance must cover the expenses of medical, helicopter, or emergency evacuation, and cancellations of the trip.
Travel insurance is essential for your safety protection. You might face any challenges in the Himalayas because of the location and remoteness. Therefore, you will require backup for every emergency. To avoid worries because of sudden accidents and illness, insurance is important.
Furthermore, your insurance coverage should be at least $100,000. They are needed for medical expenses like altitude sickness, accidents, and helicopter evacuation (above 6,000 meters). In addition, it should also cover cases of lost bags, stolen items, and trip cancellations. Always carry a copy of your detailed insurance throughout the trek.
Another important part is choosing the right insurance company. Before buying insurance, you must read their policy and what things they will cover. We can’t take any kind of risk when it comes to you. Therefore, for a more easy and smoother process. Access Nepal has listed some of the companies that are suitable for trekking.
- For USA: Geo Blue, Faye
- For Canada: Manulife, Sun Life, Allianz Insurance
- For Australia: Cover More, Allianz Insurance
Notice: The given list of insurance companies is just a suggestion and not sponsored.
Internet, Charging, and SIM Card
There are three mobile service providers in Nepal: NTC, Ncell, and Smart Cell. Most commonly used and easily available SIM cards are Ncell and NTC. You can buy the SIM Cards at the shops in Thamel, or you can also get them at the Tribhuwan International Airport after arrival in Kathmandu. To recharge your SIM, you can buy recharge cards at the shops, which will cost you 50 NPR and 100 NPR. Make sure you have enough recharge on your SIM because Namche is the last place where they are available. Afterwards, you can’t buy them at higher places.
Furthermore, you must keep in mind, mobile networks are weak at Tengboche and in places like Dingboche, Pheriche, and Lobuche, it is completely unavailable. The last stop where you will get a good mobile network is at Gorak Shep before going to Everest Base Camp. At Kathmandu, Lukla, and Namche, mobile networks are strong.
Coming to WiFi/Internet, in Kathmandu it is available for free, and in some teahouses in Lukla and Namche Bazaar. Otherwise, teahouses will charge you per hour for using the internet. We also recommend that you bring a power bank because to charge the devices, you have to pay a certain amount at higher altitudes.
