Overview

“The 14-day Annapurna Sanctuary Trek is a Himalayan adventure that takes travellers to the heart of the Annapurna massif.”

To the traveling and trekking enthusiast, Access Nepal Tours & Trekking invites you to taste the adventure of the Annapurna Circuit Trek. This trip is a two-week trek that shows you the beauty of Nepal’s culture, diversity, and breathtaking mountain views. The trek begins from Kathmandu and ends with a successful return to the Valley. Going through the foothills of Pokhara, Gurung villages, and colourful dotted rhododendron routes, it takes you into the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek (Annapurna Base Camp Trek at 4,130 m).

Every second of the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek is filled with great views. The famous sunrise view from Poon Hill, soaking up at natural hots springs (Jhinu Danda), and eyepleasing 360° panoramas of Himalayan giants like Annapurna ranges, Hiunchuli, Machhapuchare, and Dhaulagiri, every stop has something to give.

The Annapurna Sanctuary Trek is an all-inclusive package that includes accommodation, meals, permits, ground transportation, and an experienced guide. The Nepal Annapurna Sanctuary Trek is a full package of views and nature. The Annapurna Sanctuary Trek route follows the Modi Khola valley upstream, passes traditional Gurung Villages, and terraced fields. As you go higher background changes from subtropical woods then dense bamboo and rhododendron forests, to alpine meadows.

The final push of the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek squeezes through a narrow passage between Machhapuchare and Hiunchuli into the Sanctuary, a vast glacial valley surrounded by Himalaya giants.

Annapurna Sanctuary Trek Highlights

  • Annapurna Base Camp (4,130 m) and Machhapuchre Base Camp (4,000 m).
  • Breathtaking sunrise view over the Annapurna ranges, Dhaulagiri, and other peaks from Poon Hill.
  • 360° panoramas of Annapurna Massif, Gangapurna, Hiunchuli, Machhapuchare, and other Himalayn peaksiants.
  • Natural hot springs at Jhinu Danda after trekking.
  • Trek through traditional Gurung and Magar villages (e.g., Ulleri, Ghorepani, Chhomrong) and experience rural Nepali life.

Annapurna Sanctuary Trek Overview

The Annapurna Sanctuary Trek is a trip ideal for adventure and nature lovers. It is one of the most popular trekking routes that takes travellers into the world of the Annapurna Himalayas. Starting from Kathmandu (1,324m/ 4,344ft), then to Pokhara (822m/ 2,696ft), the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek route goes along the Modi Khola river valley northward.

From the Ulleri (2050m/ 6725ft) (starting point of the trek), the trails include steep stone stairways in between the terraced farm fields and forests. The Annapurna Sanctuary Trek goes through countryside villages (mostly inhabited by Gurung and Magar communities). Along the journey, trekkers can see the authentic beauty and lifestyle of mountain culture and people. Another major highlight is at Ghorepani (2,874m/ 9,429ft) and Tadapani (2,630m/ 8,600ft). This pace rewards you with panoramic views of the Annapurna ranges, Dhaulagiri, and other surrounding mountains.

Beyond Tadapani, the trails of the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek become steep. The journey to reach Annapurna Base Camp continues as trekkers pass through Chhomrong (2,170m/ 7,119 ft) and the “Himalaya Hotel” area. Following the route upward, it takes hikers to Machhapuchre Base Camp (MBC, 3,700 m/ 12,139ft) and then to Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) at 4,130m/ 13,549ft. The best part is entering a large, open area surrounded by tall mountains or cliffs. On clear weather, the surrounding views are unparalleled. The scene where tall snowy ridges crowd the horizon around Annapurna I (8,091m/ 26,545ft) and other peaks is unforgettable.

The return journey of the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek winds down through the forested valley. Passing the hot springs at Jhinu Danda (1,760m/ 5,774ft), the route rejoins the Pokhara road at Siwai Bazaar (1,500m/ 4,921 ft) and drives back to the lakeside city. Spending a relaxing and chill night in Pokhara, the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek’s final day ends with a drive to Kathmandu. The Annapurna Sanctuary Trek itinerary lasts for 14 days, and it’s a moderate-level trek (up to 5 to 7 hours walking per day).

Annapurna Sanctuary Trek Package Information

Arrival in Kathmandu (Start of the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek)

An Access Nepal Tours and Trekking representative will help meet you at Tribhuvan International Airport after your arrival. They will assist with all airport procedures.

After all the process, we will transfer you to a hotel via private vehicle. It’s an ideal time to discuss the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek itinerary details with your guide and pick up any last-minute supplies (like hiking boots or trekking clothes). Before officially starting a trek, you have extra days, so you can get plenty of rest.

Annapurna Sanctuary Trek Accommodation

The lodging service in the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek is standard teahouses run by local families. Unlike the Everest Base Camp Trek, the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek has limited accommodation options. The rooms typically have two single beds, a warm blanket, and a pillow for each guest.

During a 14-day trek, you stay for 3 nights in Kathmandu, 2 nights in Pokhara, and 9 nights in teahouses along the Annapurna Sanctuary Trekking Route. The rooms are shared, and during the trek, the Annapurna Circuit and Sanctuary, the rooms are generally dormitory-style rooms with several beds in one room. This type of accommodation is more common at high altitudes.

At lower elevations, attached bathrooms with hot showers are available. At high elevation, these services get more rustic (shared toilets and hot bucket water are only available).

You can upgrade the accommodation level with extra cost, but it might be limited due to the remoteness. Therefore, booking as early as possible is best advised.

Annapurna Sanctuary Trek Food

The package includes full board meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) along with 3 cups of tea/coffee and seasonal fruits during the trek. During your stay in Kathmandu and Pokhara, breakfast is included with a complimentary welcome and farewell dinner in Kathmandu. The food you eat during the Sanctuary trek has both Nepali and Western dishes.

  • Breakfast: Oatmeal porridge, eggs (fried or omelette), pancakes, bread, or traditional Tibetan bread with butter/cheese.
  • Lunch/Dinner: The staple is dal-bhat (steamed rice with lentils, vegetable curry, and pickles), and other options include potatoes, vegetable curries, noodles or macaroni, dumplings, and soups.
  • Beverages: 3 cups of Tea or coffee are provided during the trek. You can also order additional drinks or snacks (juice, biscuits, energy bars, chocolate) for a small extra charge.

If you have any dietary needs (vegetarian, vegan, allergies), please inform us in advance, so your meals can be arranged accordingly.

It is advised to eat a balanced diet to stay energetic and well-acclimatized. Avoid smoking and alcohol during the trek. It’s best to carry some high-energy snacks (chocolate bars, nuts) to supplement your diet.

Best Season to Trek the Annapurna Circuit and Sanctuary

The best seasons for the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek are Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to December). However, this trek is doable year-round.

  • Spring (Mar to May): It offers warmer days and clear skies. The main highlight is the blooming rhododendrons and wildflowers all over the trail. During spring, mountain visibility is great and routes are relatively dry.
  • Autumn (Sept to Dec): The peak season for trekking. The weather is more stable with clear skies and crisp air. It offers breathtaking views of the Annapurna massif.

Monsoon season (June to August) brings heavy rain, slippery trails, and leeches, it’s best to avoid trekking then. Winter (Dec to Jan) is very cold in the Himalayas. You can see snow likely above 3,000m. If you trek in winter, be prepared for subzero nights. Though Access Nepal Tours and Trekking operates the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek throughout the year, it is still best to trek during the best seasons for a better experience.

Weight Limit and Porter Services in Annapurna Region Trek

We strongly recommend packing light. The porters are included in the package to carry heavy bags. One porter is provided for two trekkers, and they can carry up to about 10 kg of your gear.

You have to carry your daypack (about 5 to 8 kg) by yourself. Beyond the porter’s allowance, extra baggage slows you down and hard to walk, especially at steep sections. We advise you to pack smartly, bringing only essential items and leaving non-essentials (extra footwear, heavy books, etc.) at the hotel or shipping them ahead.

We suggest that you tag your bags and keep your valuables with you (if possible, do not bring valuable things during the trek).

Nepal Tourist Visa Requirements

To enter the country, foreigners need a Nepal tourist visa to enter the country. Travelers can easily get a tourist visa after arriving at Kathmandu airport. To obtain a visa, you will need a passport valid for 6 months, a passport-sized photo, and the visa fee.

Nepal Tourist Visa Fees: $25 for 15 days, $40 for 30 days, and $100 for 90 days (for more details, go through Nepal Visa Information 2025/2026 A Comprehensive Guide for Travelers). You can pay the fees in US dollars or equivalent in other major currencies.

Nationals of a few countries (e.g. Afghanistan, Iraq, Cameroon, Ghana, Somalia, Nigeria, etc.) must obtain a visa in advance from a Nepali consulate. Without a visa, you will be deemed eligible for entry.

For a smooth process, you can apply online Nepal Tourist Visa beforehand and carry the visa fee in cash (small bills) when you arrive.

Annapurna Sanctuary Trek Permits

There are two trekking permits required for the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek: Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) permit and Trekkers’ Information Management System (TIMS) card (TIMS is not mandatory for the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek. ACAP alone suffices for this trek.). ACAP Permit costs around $30 USD (NPR 3,000) for a one-month permit.

The permits required for this trek are arranged by our company on your behalf. The cost of permits are included in the package. To get a permits, you have to send us a photocopy of your passport and one passport size photo.

Annapurna Sanctuary Trek Insurance

A comprehensive travel insurance is a must for trekking in the Annapurna region. Things to consider when buying travel insurance are:

  • Coverage: The Insurance policy should cover high-altitude trekking (at least up to 4,500 or 5,000 m). It must have included emergency helicopter evacuation (in case of any medical issues). Helicopter evacuations, especially a mountain rescue, are expensive, therefore, travel insurance is crucial.
  • Mandate: The Nepal Government of Tourism Board has made travel insurance mandatory for every trekker. For your safety and protection, insurance covering accidents, illness, and evacuation is required.

Extra Expenses on the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek

Though our package is all-inclusive, we still advise you to carry some amount for personal expenses like:

  • Showers and Charging: Teahouses charge you some amount (typically $2-3 for a shower, $1-2 to charge a phone) for a hot shower or to charge devices.
  • Wi-Fi/Phone Calls: WiFi is mostly free in Kathmandu and Pokhara. But as you trek higher, you have to pay the extra amount (usually $2-5/hour). You can expect a poor internet connection, so it’s best not to rely on it.
  • Laundry: A basic laundry service (usually $1-2 per kg of clothing) is available at some lodges. The ideal option is to carry a change of clothes, and you can handwash small items.
  • Snacks/Drinks: To buy extra snacks, bottled water, or drinks (like tea, instant coffee, or beer) on the trail.
  • Personal Purchases: To buy souvenirs, SIM card top-ups, tips, or any unexpected needs.

$15 to $20 USD per day (in Nepali rupees) is enough.

A Typical Day on Annapurna Sanctuary Trek Itinerary

The Annapurna Sanctuary Trek itinerary is carefully designed for steady acclimatization and a safe trek.

  • Morning: Wake up early (around 6:00- 7:00 AM), have breakfast, and continue hiking while the air is cool and fresh.
  • Morning Trek: The trek lasts for 3 to 4 hours, following the Sanctuary route and passing through villages and forests.
  • Lunch Break: After a morning hike, we stop for a hearty lunch (typically dal-bhat or noodles with vegetables). You can rest and recharge your energy during a 45 to 60-minute break.
  • Afternoon Trek: The trek continues for 3 to 4 more hours after a rest. By afternoon, we reach our overnight teahouse.
  • Evening: Dinner is served around 7:00 to 8:00 PM. At teahouses, you can rest, have a hot drink/ snacks, or chit-chat with fellow trekkers. We sleep early to rest and start again with full energy.

On average, the walking distance is around 10 to 15km (depends on the itinerary), which takes 5 to 6 hours of walking. With rest in between, it gives your body enough time to adjust to the altitude.

Water and Hydration on Trek

To acclimate and stay safe trek you have to keep your body well-hydrated throughout the trek. We suggest you drink 3 to 4 liters of water per day throughout the trek.

For convince, carry a reusable water bottle (with a 1 or 2-liter capacity). Refill it whenever water is available. Keep in mind, don’t just drink water from anywhere; drink boiled or purified water only. The teahouses sell boiled water or mineral water.

Also, bring electrolyte powders or sports drinks to replace salts lost through sweat during the trek. You can explore more about water purification while trekking from our previous blog post also.

We provided unlimited water purification tablets during the trek.

Internet, SIM Card, & Charging

The Internet is free and easily available in the lower regions (especially Kathmandu & Pokhara). However, as you climb higher, the WiFi becomes scarce. Though some teahouses provide internet at extra cost, they are not reliable and have poor connections. It’s best to enjoy time closely with nature instead of being in the digital world.

For a SIM card, you have to buy a Nepali SIM card in Kathmandu or Pokhara (passport required). NTC and Ncell are major SIM card companies in Nepal. In remote areas, NTC has good network coverage. With a SIM card, you can buy data that gives access to the internet. However, do not expect to be the best, as the network quality at higher Annapurna Sanctuary Trek routes is poor.

For charging electronic devices, most teahouses have it. Bring the adapter (Type C, Type D, and Type M are mostly used in Nepal). You have to pay a small amount ($1-2) to charge. We suggest you bring a power bank and extra batteries.

We are reachable via WhatsApp/phone at any time in case of an emergency.

Tipping Culture for Guides and Porters

As an appreciation and gratitude, tipping the guides, porters, and other staff is are common practice in Nepal. A general guideline of tipping for guides and porters is:

  • Guides: $15 to $20 per day for the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek.
  • Porters: $10 to $15 per day.

This estimation is roughly of 10 or 12% of the trek cost. Tipping is not mandatroy and there is no official rules on how much tip to give. It’s all on how much satisfied you are with their work. You can hand the tip directly to each individual (often in an envelope) at the end of the trek

Book the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek

Annapurna Sanctuary Mar 2018 • Friends A friend and I had talked about taking this trek for years, and we finally made it happen this year. We chose Access Nepal to do the Annapurna Sanctuary trek with, and they delivered in every way. It was a more scenic route to the Annapurna Base Camp. Sadhana was our contact point, and was lovely, and made everything clear and concise, from start to finish. Our Guide, Devman, was obviously highly knowledgeable, experienced and professional, and gave us subtle suggestions about things that ultimately made a big difference, like where & when to stop for lunch based on the particular weather we had or that he could see was coming. He was also so passionate about the mountains and he and our two lovely Porters were joyful to be with! We spent a lot of the time laughing. When I trek again in Nepal, it will be through this company.

Trekking Annapurna Sanctuary May 2018 • Friends Had a great trekking holiday with Access Nepal Tours all thanks to our knowledge and encouraging guide Kumar and the 2 hard working Porters Sudip and Sarog. The trek was a bit challenging at times but overall a trek suitable for all. Our group included a 75 year old who inspired us throughout the trip. The Tea houses were all adequate for the trek and the food geared towards being nutrionalal, tasty and plenty of it. The views we're exceptional and Pokhara a good place to stop before and after the trek. I recommend taking the flight back to Katmandu from Pokhara as it gives a different perspective and good views of Katmandu. I recommend this trip as it's something different with adventure and if you like peace, tranquility with astonishing views and good company (with Abit of exercise). Nepal and the Himalayas is a memorable and humbling place to visit.

Trekking Annapurna Sanctuary May 2018 • Friends Our trip to Nepal and the Annapurna Sanctuary trail was fantastic and a experience of a lifetime!!! Our guide Kumar picked us up from the airport and looked after us wonderfully all the time, especially me because of my age (75). I was the oldest he taken on a trek. This was the hardest walk that I ever undertaken and felt better at the end than the beginning! Thank you, Kumar and the two young porters to make it such a wonderful experience!!! God willing we hope to come back to Nepal in the near future.

I went with Access Nepal to complete the Annapurna Sanctuary trek (slightly longer scenic route that arrives at ABC) in March this year, with a friend. We had an amazing guide, Devman, who had everything sorted brilliantly, from start to finish. It meant that we could relax and focus on the trek and the mind-blowing sights, knowing that he was taking care of everything. He and our Porters looked after us all beautifully over the 14 days. We all taught each other a few new card games in the guesthouses too over plenty of cups of hot lemon honey tea at the end of the day's walk. When we got back, we compared what people were paying in accomm and meals when trekking independently, and it's quite striking how competitive it is, with all of the inclusions (like proper down jackets, fresh fruits and snacks in addition to meals, transit fares etc etc), and for us it was a no brainer when you're going up into these gigantic Mountains with someone like Devman who is an expert in what he does. I had the most brilliant time. Will be going with them again.
