Overview

The Hidden Treasure of the Eastern Himalayas, the Makalu Base Camp Trek is one of the most thrilling adventures. It is for those who are looking for a remote, off-the-beaten-path trek. This base camp is home to Mount Makalu (8,485 meters/ 27,838 feet), the fifth-highest peak in the world. It is one of the most remote and challenging treks, popular among adventure lovers.

Passing through the dense forests, beautiful landscapes, and villages, the Makalu Base Camp is part of Makalu Barun National Park. This trek invites trekkers into the world of Nepal’s raw and unfiltered wilderness journey. This trek shows nature in its purest form as you walk along the rhododendrons, pine, bamboo forests, alpine meadows, and rocky terrains. In comparison to other popular treks like Everest Base Camp or Annapurna Base Camp, the Makalu Base Camp Trek is quiet and less taken.

Walking through the breathtaking scenery, deep river gorges, high-altitude glaciers, and rugged terrains, an 18-day Makalu Base Camp Trek adventure is a dream adventure. The Makalu Base Camp Trek from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar via flight is the starting point of the trek. It’s a small town located in the Sankhuwasabha district of Eastern Nepal known for being the deepest valley in the world. From here, the trek moves towards Makalu Barun National Park, home to wildlife like red pandas, Himalayan thar, Snow Leopard, and many others.

Besides the nature wonder, this trek brings you close to the culture and lifestyle of the Himalayan communities. The trek takes you through traditional Rai and Sherpa villages like Num, Seduwa, Tashigaon, Khongma Danda, Yangri Kharka, and Langmale Kharka. The friendly gestures of local people as they welcome you with a cup of tea and smile are the cherry on top.

The highlight of this trek is reaching the Makalu Base Camp altitude, which stands at 4,870 meters/15,977 feet. From the top of the base camp, trekkers will be rewarded with jaw-dropping panoramic views of some of the highest peaks in the world, including Mount Everest (8,849 meters/ 29,032 feet), Kanchenjunga (8,586 meters/ 28,169 feet), Lhotse (8,516 meters/ 27,940 feet), Makalu (8,485 meters/ 27,838 feet), and Baruntse (7,162 meters/ 23,497 feet).

The Makalu Base Camp Trek difficulty level is challenging. It requires a good level of fitness due to the difficult terrain. The trek involves walking on steep hills, rivers, and high-altitude passes. The main challenge crossing through Keke La (4,127 meters/ 13540 feet) and Shipton La (4,216 meters/ 13,832 feet). Therefore, trekking during the peak season is highly recommended. The best time to trek to Makalu Base Camp is Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November).

Best Time for Makalu Base Camp Trek:

If you are planning for a trek to Makalu Base Camp and are in dilemma on when to travel for the safety and best experience, knowing the best time to visit is a must. The best time for Makalau Base Camp Trek is Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November). These are the peak seasons for trekking to the Makalu region. The clear environment, stable weather, and temperature make it an ideal time for trekking through the Makalu region.

  • Spring (March to May): The temperature during the spring season ranges between 10°C (50°F) during the day to -5°C to 0°C (23°F to 32°F) at night. It is the best time for trekking in Nepal because of the dry and clear trails. The paths will also be filled with blooming rhododendrons and wildflowers. The warm temperature along with clear skies and mountain views makes it pleasant to walk for long hours. The weather also gets stable with very low chances of snowfall.
  • Autumn (September to November): This season is the peak season for trekking in Nepal because of stable weather. This time of season, the day gets warm and the night gets chilly. The temperature ranges between 5°C to 10°C (41°F to 50°F) during the day and at night, it will drop between -5°C to 0°C (23°F to 32°F) at higher altitudes. The trails are also dry and dust-free just after the monsoon season. The great visibility offers the best mountain views and stable weather makes optimal for the trek. It is also the major festival season in Nepal; Dashain and Tihar. Since it’s a peak season, the trail will be crowded and lively.

Seasons to Avoid for Trekking:

  • Winter (December to February): This time of season to trek to Makalu Base Camp is very risky and challenging. It is highly recommended to avoid trekking in winter at high altitude reason due to the heavy snowfall and harsh cold temperatures. At high altitudes, the temperature in the daytime drops as low as -20°C to -30°C (-4°F to -22°F). Trekking in this degree is dangerous. The heavy snowfall causes blockage of trails and slippery paths. Therefore, it’s best not to trek in the winter season.
  • Summer (June to August): In Nepal, summer and monsoon seasons coincide and cause heavy rainfall. The trails get slippery and muddy due to the rain making it risky for the trek. It also brings the risks of landslides and floods, especially at higher altitudes. The visibility is also poor and also brings the leeches. Though the temperature gets warm in the lower region, high-altitude still experiences quite cold.
