The Gokyo Valley Trek, which lies in the heart of the Everest region, is an adventurous trekking journey that offers a mixture of natural beauty, cultural richness, and spiritual significance. This 15-day Gokyo Valley trek in Nepal is ideal for those seeking a quieter, less crowded alternative to the more famous Everest Base Camp route. Throughout the journey, you be amazed by the beauty of the Himalayas. The Gokyo Valley Trek is located in the Khumbu region.
On this trekking route, you will experience the breathtaking heights of the Gokyo Ri trek at 5,357 meters (17,575 feet). After reaching the summit, trekkers will get the chance to enjoy panoramic views of some of the world’s tallest mountains, including Mt. Everest (8,848.86m), Lhotse (8,414m), Makalu (8,485m), and Cho Oyu (8,188m). Another humbling and inspiring part of this journey is the vast expanse of Ngozumpa Glacier, Nepal’s largest glacier.
The adventurous Gokyo Lakes trek begins with a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, one of the most dangerous and thrilling flights in the world. After reaching the gateway to the Everest region, the trekker’s adventure starts by passing through the beautiful villages of Phakding and Namche Bazaar. Namche, famously known as the gateway to Everest, is a village full of bright energy. It’s a palace where trekkers can acclimatize, explore local markets, visit monasteries, and learn the mountaineering history of this region.
Following the Gokyo Valley trek map, we will leave Namche Bazar. The Gokyo trek route splits from the traditional Everest Base Camp and leads us to the charming Gokyo Valley. On the way, we will pass through small villages like Dole (4,040m), and Machhermo (4,470m). Here, you will get a glimpse of the traditional Sherpa lifestyle. The stone houses and yak pastures of these villages give another peaceful contrast to the stunning mountain scenery in the background.
The highlight of this trek is the beautiful Gokyo Lakes (4,700–5,000 m), which are blessings to the eyes and ease your tiredness.
These Gokyo Lakes in Nepal are the world’s highest freshwater lake system, comprising six main lakes. Among them, Thonak Lake is the largest. Similarly, the third lake, Dudh Pokhari, is considered sacred by the local people and Hindu followers. Gokyo Lake is the key attraction of the trek. The breathtaking beauty of the azure waters of the lakes and snow-capped peaks on the backdrop is a sight to see.
Gokyo village (4,750 meters) is a peaceful settlement lying on the shores of the third lake. Here, trekkers can soak themselves in the calm atmosphere, watching the yaks graze in the surrounding meadows and enjoy the warmth of Sherpa hospitality. From Gokyo, the trekker will hike through challenging but rewarding hikes leading to the summit of Gokyo Ri. Gokyo ri altitude is (5,357 m) from where you can enjoy the mountains’ panoramic views, making every step worthwhile.
Gokyo Lake Trek is full of the culture and traditions of the Sherpa people along with stunning landscapes. Looking to the Gokyo Valley trek map, we will pass through several villages and monasteries, including the historic Tengboche Monastery and the Khumjung Monastery.

Therefore, to stay safe, Access Nepal follows the “Climb High, Sleep Low” principle. Our itinerary also includes two acclimatization days at Namche Bazaar (3,440m) and Gokyo Valley (4,750m). Rest stops are very important before climbing to high altitudes. Acclimatization helps your body to adapt.
To prevent altitude sickness, you have to walk slowly and drink 3 to 4 liters of water daily. Most importantly, avoid alcohol and cigarette consumption while trekking. They will worsen the difficulty in breathing. Eat proper, nutritious food and give your body time to rest.

14 days slipping through the fingers very quick Nov 2019 • Solo We have good time with the trekking team and other team members over the 14 days Gokyo Ri trekking. Thanks again to our guide Giri, porters Sanga (in fact, he takes the lead during the trekking too), Rajun and Boan (sorry for my spelling of their names). All the trekking arrangement did very well, Well done! Altitude sickness: all briefing and preventative intake done Take helicopter to Lukla: unexpected but did not ask why, anyway, enjoy the holidays. The toughest part is not climbing Goyko Ri in the early morning, but the 6 to 7 hours ride on a mini van from the Manthali (Ramechhap) airport back to Kathmandu. Hope it could be modified in the near future. The only regret: can't make the starry night photo right, as just too cold outside. Recommended! Calnu calnu! move move!

Go with Giri Nov 2019 Karki Raj (AKA Giri) was an amazing guide. He was funny and knowledgeable and took care of us through our arduous trek to Gokyo-ri. I highly recommend booking with him if you can. The trek itself is incredible. Much less crowded than EBC, Gokyo-ri offers similar altitudes and I'm sure equally breathtaking views (you sure won't have any breath left at the top, anyway). The tour at the beginning of the trip is also very interesting and culturally immersive. Though looking back, your time in Kathmandu will not be the highlight of the trip. The trek is just so much better. All-in-all I think Access Nepal is a good company to go trekking with. They are professional, we stayed in a nice hotel in Nepal and always nice tea houses along the trek. We ate lots of Dal Bhat.

Gokyo Valley trek November, 2019 Nov 2019 As a solo traveler I did the Gokyo Lakes trek with Access Nepal in November 2019. Beginning from Lukla on our first day we were trekking in the rain, but after that the weather cleared up, with excellent views of the Himalaya. We had a group of 5 trekkers, 3 porters and a guide, Giri. On our 6th day of trekking we reached Gokyo Village, a small village with several lodges and restaurants catering to trekkers. It sits at the edge of Gokyo Lake, a beautiful alpine lake surrounded by spectacular peaks and flanked by Ngozumba Glacier, the longest glacier in Nepal. Early the next morning our group did the climb up Gokyo Ri, reaching the summit about 2 ½ hours later, where we enjoyed a 360 degree view of the Himalaya, with blue skies and very few clouds. With good weather for 10 of our 11 days trekking it was all well worth it, and I am glad I did it, even though I flew half way around the planet to get there. Our guide Giri was great! He was very knowledgeable of the area, and made sure that everything went smoothly. Our contact in Kathmandu was Rahul, who organized the trip and took care of transfers and hotel accommodations. About halfway through the trip I had caught a bad cold and was feeling rotten when we got back to Kathmandu at the end of the trek. My return flight was booked for late in the evening but check out time at the hotel was noon. Rahul contacted the hotel staff and got an extension on my check out time, which shortened the wait time at the airport. In summary, I would highly recommend Access Nepal.
