Navratri Ashtami 2026 & Kanya Puja: Date, Age, Gifts, Benefits

Every Navratri, there is one morning when the whole house wakes up early. The kitchen smells of halwa and black chana, little girls arrive in their best clothes, and the elders keep checking the clock for the Sandhi Puja. That morning is Ashtami.

In 2026, it comes with a twist. Ashtami and Navami fall on the same day in most of India, and the Ashtami tithi ends before noon. So if you plan to fast, do Kanya Pujan, or attend Sandhi Puja, timing matters more than usual this year.

This guide keeps it simple: the exact date, the times that matter, how to do the puja and Navratri Kanya Puja at home (right age, how many girls, gifts and invitation text), and what the day actually means.

Keep in Mind: Navratri Ashtami (Durga Ashtami) 2026 is on Monday, 19 October 2026 in India, and that is also the best day for Navratri Kanya Puja. Do Kanya Puja in the morning, ideally before the Ashtami tithi ends at about 10:51–10:53 AM IST. Invite nine girls aged 2 to 10 (and one boy as Langur, if your family follows it). Sandhi Puja is roughly 10:27–11:15 AM IST. Dussehra is on 20 October. In Nepal, Maha Ashtami (Dashain) is on Sunday, 18 October 2026.

Durga Ashtami 2026 is on Monday, 19 October, because the Ashtami tithi is present at sunrise that day (the udaya tithi rule).

Times are for Delhi and Hyderabad; your city may differ by a few minutes, so check a local panchang before starting Sandhi Puja.

Why are Ashtami and Navami on the same day in 2026?

The Ashtami tithi is short this year. It is present at sunrise on 19 October, so that day is Ashtami. It ends mid-morning, and Navami begins at once and fills the rest of the day. That is why most North Indian calendars keep Ashtami, Sandhi Puja and Navami together on 19 October.

Is Ashtami on 18 or 19 October?

You may see both dates online, and both can be right depending on where you live:

  • Nepal (Dashain): Maha Ashtami 18 October, Navami 20 October, Tika 21 October.
  • India: 19 October (most Panchangs).
  • Bengal Durga Puja: Maha Ashtami 19 October, Maha Navami 20 October, Bijoya Dashami 21 October.
  • USA and Canada: many local Panchangs put Durgashtami on Sunday, 18 October, because the tithi falls differently in those time zones.

If in doubt, follow your family priest or your local temple’s calendar.

Who is worshipped on Ashtami: Maa Mahagauri?

The eighth day of Navratri belongs to Maa Mahagauri, the eighth of the nine forms of Durga (Navdurga).

Her name means “the very fair one”. She is shown dressed in white, riding a white bull, with four hands: one holds a trident, one a damru, and the other two bless and reassure.

The story behind her is simple and moving. Parvati did years of hard penance in the forest to win Lord Shiva as her husband. Sun, dust and hardship darkened her body. Pleased with her devotion, Shiva bathed her in the waters of the Ganga, and her body shone white again. That radiant form is Mahagauri.

What it means for us: no effort made with a sincere heart is wasted. Mahagauri is prayed to for purity of mind, peace at home and the washing away of past mistakes.

Mantra: Om Devi Mahagauryai Namah (chant 108 times with a rudraksha or tulsi mala).

In Bengal and parts of eastern India, Ashtami is also the day of the fierce Chamunda form during Sandhi Puja, and in Nepal it is linked with Goddess Kali.

Why is Ashtami the most important day of Navratri?

Ashtami is the peak of Navratri because it marks the moment the Goddess turns the battle against evil.

  • The battle with Mahishasura: Tradition holds that the fiercest fighting happened on Ashtami. At the junction of Ashtami and Navami, Devi took the Chamunda form and destroyed the demons, Chanda and Munda. Sandhi Puja remembers that exact moment.
  • All nine forms in one day: In Durga Puja, all nine forms of Durga are worshipped together on Maha Ashtami.
  • Respect for the feminine: Kanya Pujan honours young girls as the living Goddess. It is a reminder that every girl deserves the same respect at home and in society.
  • Inner meaning: The eight days stand for the slow cleaning of the mind: anger, greed, and pride are burnt away one by one. Ashtami is when that effort bears fruit.
  • Vrat and blessings: Many families who cannot fast all nine days fast only on Ashtami. It is believed that a sincere Ashtami puja brings the blessings of the whole Navratri.

How to do Ashtami puja at home (step by step)

Start early on 19 October, because the Ashtami tithi ends around 10:51 AM IST. If you are short on time, finish the main puja and Kanya Pujan first and keep the rest for later in the day.

What you need: a picture or idol of Durga, red cloth, kalash with water, roli and kumkum, akshat (unbroken rice), red flowers or a red chunri, a ghee diya, incense, coconut, fruits, and the prasad (halwa, puri, and black chana).

  1.  Wake up early and bathe. Wear clean clothes; red, white, or pink are good choices.
  2. Clean the puja space. Spread a red cloth and place the Goddess facing east or north.
  3. Take a sankalp. Hold water and rice in your hand and say your name, the day, and your wish for the puja.
  4. Worship Ganesha first. Offer a flower and a little rice so the puja goes smoothly.
  5. Worship Maa Mahagauri. Offer water, roli, akshat, flowers, a chunri, and sindoor. Light the diya and incense.
  6. Chant. Recite “Om Devi Mahagauryai Namah” 108 times. If you can, read the Durga Saptashati or Durga Chalisa.
  7. Offer bhog. A coconut or coconut-based sweet is the traditional offering to Mahagauri, along with halwa, puri, and chana.
  8. Do Kanya Pujan (steps below).
  9. Havan (optional). Many families do a small havan on Ashtami or Navami to close the Navratri worship.
  10. Aarti. End with the Durga aarti and share the prasad with everyone in the house.

Sandhi Puja 2026: time and meaning

Sandhi Puja 2026 falls on the morning of Monday, 19 October, roughly between 10:27 AM and 11:15 AM IST.

“Sandhi” means a meeting point. The Sandhi Puja is done in the 48 minutes when Ashtami ends and Navami begins: the last 24 minutes of Ashtami plus the first 24 minutes of Navami. It is considered the most powerful moment of the entire Durga Puja.

How it is done:

  • 108 lamps: Devotees light 108 diyas, one for each sacred count of the mala.
  • 108 lotuses: In Bengal, 108 lotus flowers are offered to the Goddess.
  • Symbolic offering: Where bali (sacrifice) was once the custom, a banana, cucumber, or pumpkin is now offered instead. Even Belur Math in West Bengal does a symbolic offering with a banana.
  • Chanting: Mantras of Chamunda, and the dhak drums beat without stopping in Bengali pandals.

Tip for 2026: Because the window is in the middle of a working Monday morning, plan ahead. Set an alarm for 10:15 AM, keep the lamps ready, and check the exact Ashtami end time for your city.

Navratri Kanya Puja: what it is and why it matters

Navratri Kanya Puja is the ritual of worshipping young girls as living forms of Goddess Durga, usually on Ashtami or Navami. It is also called Kanya Pujan, Kumari Puja, or Kanjak.

The idea is beautiful in its simplicity. For eight days, we pray to the Goddess in an idol or picture. On Ashtami, we bow before her in a real child: we wash her feet, feed her, and seek her blessing. Many families end their Navratri fast only after this ritual.

Scriptures such as the Devi Bhagavata Purana mention Kumari worship on all nine days, but most families today do it once, on Ashtami or Navami, as per their family tradition. In Bengal, Belur Math holds its famous Kumari Puja on Ashtami.

When is Kanya Puja in 2026?

Kanya Puja 2026 (Sharad Navratri) is on Monday, 19 October 2026, the day of both Ashtami and Navami in most of India.

Navratri Kanya Puja Date
Sharad Navratri 2026 Monday, 19 October 2026
Bengal Durga Puja 2026 Kumari Puja on 19 October (Maha Ashtami)
Nepal Dashain 2026 Maha Ashtami Sunday, 18 October; Navami 20 October
USA / Canada 2026 Often Sunday, 18 October
Chaitra Navratri 2026 Around 26 March 2026

When was Kanya Puja in 2025?

If you searched for last year’s date: in Sharad Navratri 2025, Kanya Puja was done on Tuesday, 30 September 2025 (Ashtami) and Wednesday, 1 October 2025 (Navami) in India.

Kanya Puja age: Which girls should you invite?

The traditional Kanya Puja age is 2 to 10 years. Girls under 2 are usually not chosen, and girls above 10 are generally not invited as Kumaris. Each age is linked to a form of the Goddess and a blessing:

Age Form of the Goddesses Traditional blessing
2 years Kumarika Removes sorrow and poverty, gives strength
3 years Trimurti Family welfare, wealth, and grain at home
4 years Kalyani Learning, success, and wishes fulfilled
5 years Rohini Good health, relief from illness
6 years Kalika Victory over enemies and obstacles
7 years Chandika Wealth and prosperity
8 years Shambhavi Success in work, respect, and recognition
9 years Durga Peace and protection, even beyond this life
10 years Subhadra All good wishes fulfilled

This list comes from Devi Bhagavata traditions. In practice, families simply invite girls of mixed ages within 2 to 10, and that is perfectly fine. A healthy, happy child who is comfortable coming to your home is the right choice.

Kanya Puja: how many girls should you invite?

The ideal number is nine girls, one for each of the nine forms of Durga, plus one boy as Langur (a form of Bhairav, the Goddess’s guardian) if your family follows that custom.

If you cannot find nine girls, do not worry. Scriptures leave the number to your capacity and to how many girls are available. Common choices:

  • 9 girls + 1 boy: the most complete and popular form.
  • 1 girl: perfectly valid; worship her with full love as the Goddess herself.
  • Odd numbers (3, 5 or 7): many families prefer these when nine is not possible.
  • Increasing each day: the old practice of one girl on day 1, two on day 2, and so on up to nine.

What matters is sincerity, not the headcount. One girl honoured with care is better than nine rushed through a ritual.

For 2026, plan to start around 8:30–9:00 AM on 19 October so you finish before the Ashtami tithi ends at about 10:51 AM IST.

Keep ready: a clean mat or chairs, a plate and water to wash feet, a towel, kumkum or roli, akshat (rice), red thread (kalava), red chunris, flowers, the prasad, and the gifts.

  1.  Invite in advance. Call or send an invitation to the parents a day or two before (see the invitation text below).
  2. Welcome the girls. Greet them at the door with joy, as you would greet the Goddess.
  3. Wash their feet. Place their feet in a plate, pour clean water gently, and wipe them dry. Apply alta or kumkum if it is your custom.
  4. Seat them in a row. Put the Langur boy at one end.
  5. Tilak and kalava. Apply a tilak, tie a red thread on the right wrist, and offer flowers and akshat.
  6. Offer a chunri. Place a small red chunri over each girl’s head if you can.
  7. Serve the prasad. Halwa, puri, and black chana are traditional, with fruit and a sweet.
  8. Give gifts and dakshina. Hand each girl her gift and a little money.
  9. Seek blessings. Touch their feet and ask them to bless the family.
  10. See them off happily. Then the family eats the same prasad and breaks the fast.

Kanya Puja mantra: Many families chant “Om Shri Kumaryai Namah” while offering tilak and flowers.

Kanya Puja gifts: Useful ideas for every budget

Kanya Puja Gift Ideas

Kanya Puja Gift Ideas

Budget per girl Gift Ideas
Under NRS 100 Hair clips or rubber bands, bangles, a pencil set, crayons, a small chocolate, a red chunri
NRS 100-200 Notebook and pencil box, colouring book, small storybook, steel spoon or glass, bindi and bangle set
NRS 200-400 Steel tiffin box, water bottle, school bag pouch, kids’ book set, art kit

Always add: a little dakshina (cash) and a fruit, as per tradition.

Tips for meaningful gifts:

  •  Give everyone the same gift so no child feels left out.
  •  Choose study items; they support a girl’s education, which is the real spirit of the ritual.
  •  Avoid sharp items, tiny parts for very young girls, and cheap plastic that breaks the next day.
  •  Wrap gifts in paper or cloth bags instead of plastic.

Kanya Puja benefits: spiritual and social

Kanya Puja is believed to complete the Navratri worship and bring the Goddess’s blessings into the home.

Spiritual benefits (as per tradition):

  • Completes the Navratri vrat: many believe the fast and puja feel complete only after Kanya Puja.
  • Removes obstacles and sorrow: each girl, as a form of Durga, is said to clear a different trouble (see the age table above).
  • Brings prosperity and harmony: families pray for health, wealth and peace at home. • Fulfils wishes: a sincere Kanya Puja is believed to please the Goddess more than any costly offering.

Social and personal benefits:

  • Teaches respect for girls: children grow up seeing girls honoured, not ignored.
  • Builds community: neighbours’ and relatives’ children come together, and families reconnect.
  • Encourages giving: it is a natural chance to feed and support girls from families who need it.

The ritual carries one clear message: if we bow before girls on Ashtami, we must also protect, educate, and respect them every other day of the year.

Kanya Puja near me: where can you join or organise one?

If you live in a flat, have no young girls nearby, or are away from home, you can still be part of a Kanya Puja on 19 October 2026.

  • Local Durga temples and Devi mandirs: many hold a community Kanya Pujan on Ashtami. Call a day ahead to ask the time and whether you can sponsor bhog or gifts.
  • Durga Puja pandals: Bengali community pandals often hold Kumari Puja on Maha Ashtami morning.
  • Housing societies and RWAs: many societies host one shared Kanya Puja; offer to help or contribute.
  • Girls’ homes, orphanages and NGOs: with permission, you can sponsor a meal and school supplies. This is one of the most meaningful ways to do Kanya Puja.
  • Abroad: Hindu temples and community centres in the USA, UK, Canada and Australia often host Kanya Puja on the weekend closest to Ashtami (in 2026, likely Sunday, 18 October).
  • Nepal: Kumari Puja is part of Dashain worship at Durga and Kali temples; ask your local temple or priest.

Quick tip: Search “Kanya Puja near me” or “Durga temple near me” on Google Maps, then call to confirm the date, because some temples follow 18 October and others 19 October.

Ashtami fasting rules, bhog and colour

How the fast works: Some people keep a nirjala (no water) fast, but most keep a phalahar fast with fruit, milk and vrat-friendly food. Many families break the Ashtami fast after Kanya Pujan by eating the same prasad. Those who fast all nine days usually break it after Navami puja or on Dussehra, as per family custom.

Foods allowed in the vrat: fruits, milk, curd, paneer, makhana, sabudana, kuttu or singhara flour, sweet potato, potato, nuts, and sendha namak (rock salt).

Avoid: grains like wheat and rice, onion, garlic, regular table salt, alcohol, meat, and eggs.

Bhog for the Goddess: coconut for Mahagauri, plus halwa, puri, and black chana for Kanya Pujan.

What to wear: Colour lists for Navratri differ between calendars. White is the colour of Maa Mahagauri, and red and pink are always auspicious for Durga Puja, so any of these is a safe and meaningful choice.

Health note: Pregnant women, elders, diabetics, and people on medication should choose a light fruit fast or skip fasting. Devotion lives in the heart, not in hunger.

How Ashtami is celebrated in different places

The same day is celebrated in very different ways across South Asia.

  • North India (Delhi, UP, Punjab, Haryana, Bihar): Ashtami is the day of Kanya Pujan, also called Kanjak. Homes cook halwa-puri-chana, and many families break their fast after feeding the girls.
  • West Bengal, Assam, Odisha and Bangladesh: Maha Ashtami is the heart of Durga Puja. People offer pushpanjali (flowers) in the morning, Kumari Puja is held in many pandals, and Sandhi Puja with 108 lamps is the high point. In Bangladesh, Maha Ashtami falls on 19 October 2026.
  • Gujarat and Maharashtra: Garba and dandiya nights reach their peak, and some families do a havan on Ashtami.
  • South India: The last days of Navratri are linked with Saraswati Puja and Ayudha Puja, honouring knowledge, tools and work.
  • Nepal (Dashain): Maha Ashtami of Dashain 2083 BS falls on Sunday, 18 October 2026 (Kartik 1). Goddess Kali, the fierce form of Durga, is worshipped, and special rituals take place at Taleju and other Durga temples. Fulpati comes the day before, on 17 October; Maha Navami on 20 October; and Vijaya Dashami Tika on Wednesday, 21 October, with the main tika sait at 10:26 AM, as announced by the Nepal Panchanga Nirnayak Bikash Samiti.
  • Abroad (USA, UK, Canada, Australia): Temples follow local Panchangs, so Ashtami may be on 18 or 19 October. Check with your nearest mandir.

Ashtami do’s and don’ts

Wake up early and finish the main puja before the Ashtami tithi ends Wait till afternoon for Kanya Pujan if you can do it in the morning

Final Thoughts

Navratri Ashtami 2026 asks for a little planning: an early start on Monday, 19 October, Navratri Kanya Puja with nine little goddesses before mid-morning, and a few quiet minutes for Sandhi Puja around 10:30 AM. Beyond the timings, the day is about something simple. Clean the heart, honour the girls and women around you, and trust that sincere effort is never wasted, just as Parvati’s penance became Mahagauri’s light.

Jai Mata Di, and Happy Durga Ashtami.

Disclaimer: Timings are based on published panchangs for Delhi and Hyderabad (IST) and Nepal’s official Dashain calendar. Local times can differ by a few minutes, so please confirm with your local panchang or priest.
