Starting from the low river valleys, the short Annapurna Circuit trek slowly climbs into the high Himalayas, crosses the famous Thorong La Pass (5,416m/ 17,769ft), and ends at the Muktinath Temple (one of the holiest pilgrimage sites).

Short Annapurna Circuit Trek 10 Days Overview

The Short Annapurna Circuit Trek packs the essence of the classic Circuit into a concise 10-day itinerary. This adventure is ideal for travelers short on time. The trek starts with a drive from Kathmandu to Besisahar (about 7 hours). The landscape completely changes from packed city buildings to Nepal’s green foothills. The route winds through green pine forests and terraced rice fields, then gradually ascends into drier alpine terrain.

Every second of the Short Annapurna Circuit Trek with Thorong La Pass is worth experiencing because each day of the trek offers dramatic scenery: waterfalls and Rhododendron forests in the lower elevations, high mountain lakes like Gangapurna Lake near Manang, and finally the barren, wind-swept slopes high above the tree line.

The trail becomes even more beautiful during the spring season. The route gets dotted with colourful blooming rhododendrons. Similarly, autumn, the peak trekking season, brings crystal-clear skies. This short trek will reward you with close-up views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. Along the way, trekkers can see a variety of ecosystems.

In lower regions (below 3,000 m), you’ll trek 6-8 hours a day through lush valleys and Gurung villages. The hike durations shorten to 3-5 hours as you climb above 3,500 m (Manang and above) to help acclimatization. On the way, you’ll meet warm-hearted locals living traditional mountain lifestyles. These villages are highly influenced by Tibetan-Buddhist culture, and you can see Buddhist monasteries (like the famous Barge Monastery in Manang), Hindu temples (Muktinath’s 108 holy water springs), and local tea-houses where villagers serve hearty Nepali and Western dishes.

The main challenge of the Short Annapurna Circuit Trek is the Thorong La High Pass (5,416 m). On day 7, you rise very early (around 3 AM) and make the steep, icy climb to the pass. The demanding ascent is rewarded by 360° views of the Himalayas extending into Tibet. The trek may be hard, but those views give a sense of accomplishment few experiences can match.

After soaking in the sunrise over the snowy peaks, the Short Annapurna Circuit Trek itinerary continues toward Muktinath Temple. This sacred temple is known for the 108 draining fountains of icy glacial water and an eternal flame.

The Annapuna Circuit Trek Short itinerary does take you to high altitude, but it is still suitable for physically fit beginners. This trek doesn’t require technical climbing skills. The short Annapurna Circuit Trek trails are well-marked and involve mainly walking on rocky, uneven ground. Combining the natural beauty, adventure, and views, the Short Annapuran Circuit Trek cost is a good deal. It is best for those who want to trek directly.

Important Note: The Short Annapurna Circuit Trek is an all-inclusive package and suitable for those who want to experince Himalaya beauty of Nepal in a limited time. Access Nepal Tours and Trekking opeartes trek throughout the year  for both group and private trek for Short Annapurna Circuit Trek.

Best Season for the Short Annapurna Circuit Trek

The best seasons for the Short Annapurna Circuit Trek are Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September or November). During these peak trekking months, the temperature gets warm and clear, with 15-25°C daytime and cool nights above 3,000m.

During the springtime, rhododendron blooms and trails are perfect for a leisurely walk. Likewise, autumn has crisp air and excellent mountain visibility. A clear autumn morning on the Annapurna Circuit trek short itinerary(typical of Best Season conditions). Trekking between Chame and Pisang offers spectacular views like this, with sunny skies and mild daytime temperatures.

Annapurna Circuit Trek During Spring Season

Spring (March to May) is the best time to do the Short Annapurna Circuit Trek. The weather is stable, temperatures are moderate, and the skies are usually clear and provide great visibility. One of the highlights of trekking in spring is the blooming rhododendron forests, making the trail colourful. However, due to the ideal conditions, the trails can become quite crowded during this season.

Annapurna Circuit Trek During Autumn Season

Autumn (September to November) is a peak trekking season to do the Annapurna Circuit Trek. The weather is clear and sunny, with mild temperatures. The skies are bright, and the mountain views are at their best. The trails are dry and stable, making the trek more comfortable and safer. Many trekkers choose autumn because of its perfect trekking conditions.

Annapurna Circuit Trek During Monsoon Season

Monsoon (June-August) brings heavy rain, leeches, and muddy trails, so it’s generally avoided. This time of year brings frequent rainfall, and trails are usually wet, muddy, and slippery, adding risks to the trek. Daytime temperatures can be hot, while nights are a bit cooler. Trekking is still possible, but you need to be very cautious and well-prepared with waterproof gear and good footwear.

Annapurna Circuit Trek During Winter Season

Winter (Dec-Feb) above Manang is very cold, and the Thorong Pass may be snow-blocked, though lower sections (e.g., Jomsom, Marpha) can be done. Trekking like the Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho Lake is not suggested. We recommend October-November or March-April for the best weather and views.

Temperature on the Short Annapurna Circuit Trek

Temperatures vary widely with altitude in the Short Annapurna Circuit Trek. In Pokhara/Kathmandu, expect daytime 20-30°C in spring/autumn. As you ascend, nights get much colder. Above 3,000m (Manang/Thorong area) daytime highs are 10-15°C, but nights can drop to -5°C or below. At Thorong La Pass (5,416m), it can be -20°C at night. Bring warm layers for sleeping (down jacket, thermal underwear) even if the days are sunny.

At lower villages (2,000-3,000m), a warm jacket is still needed in the morning/evening. Always carry a rain jacket, sudden showers or snow flurries are possible any month. We suggest checking long-range forecasts, but be prepared for cooler weather the higher you trek.

How Difficult is the Annapurna Circuit Trek?

The short Annapurna Circuit Trek is moderate to strenuous. It is not a casual stroll; you’ll hike 4-6 hours most days with steep ascents/descents and rough trails. The highest point is Thorong La Pass (5,416 m), so altitude is the biggest challenge. While you don’t need prior mountaineering experience, you should be in good physical shape. We recommend pre-trip cardio and leg training (hiking, stairs) to build stamina. Beginners can attempt the short circuit if well-prepared: our short Annapurna Circuit Trek itinerary includes acclimatization (e.g. extra rest day in Manang).

Our guides set a steady pace with frequent breaks. Plan on slow, deliberate trekking: typical rhythm is 30 minutes walking, 10-minute rest. If you can hike 5-6 hours on hilly trails at home, you’ll manage better. Our Short Annapurna Circuit Trek length of 10-day trek, can be completed safely by most fit trekkers with proper training and gear. (We always adjust package itineraries if someone is feeling unwell.)

Reaching Thorong La Pass (5,416 m) on the Annapurna Circuit short trek. This is the most challenging day (about 6-7 hours ascent), demanding high fitness and acclimatization.

Altitude Sickness and Risk during the Short Annapurna Circuit Trek

Your safety is our top priority. All trips have experienced licensed guides who are wilderness first-aid trained. They carry emergency first-aid kits (with Diamox for altitude). We follow the “climb high, sleep low” rule and monitor everyone closely. If you feel symptoms of altitude sickness (headache, nausea, dizziness), inform your guide immediately. We pause/descend if needed.

In extreme cases, we can arrange a helicopter evacuation (covered by your insurance). We mandate travel insurance with 6000m helicopter rescue cover. Always stay hydrated and walk slowly on steep days. Our pre-trek briefing covers safety tips (rain gear, spare layers, etc.), and guides set daily turnaround times to avoid risk. In short, with proper acclimatization and caution, the trek is safe for healthy hikers.

For the successful trek, it requires an expert team is required to guide. Access Nepal Tours and Trekking provides highly experienced and first-aid trained guides for your safety. Throughout the adventure, trekkers are closely monitored. In case of emergency, we will also arrange an immediate Helicopter evacuation or medical treatment.

Nepal Tourist Visa for the Short Annapurna Circuit Trek

Nepal offers a visa on arrival for most nationalities. Upon landing at Kathmandu airport, you can get a tourist visa by paying fees (approx. $30 for 15 days, $50 for 30 days, $125 for 90 days). Fill out the Nepal Online Tourist Visa form beforehand or at the airport. (Indian citizens do not require a visa.)

Make sure your passport is valid for 6+ months. It’s cash-only at the visa counter (cards not accepted). If you need multiple entries (e.g., exiting to Tibet/Bhutan), a double-entry visa costs an extra $25. We provide guidance on visa questions as part of our service.

Once you are booked, we will tell you details about the process.

Our system accepts bank transfers, major credit cards, or other payment methods. The remaining balance can be paid in Nepal (cash, credit card, or transfer) before the trek starts. We recommend securing your spot early (spaces fill up), but we also honor fixed departures (guaranteed to run).

    Last Minute Booking Options

We understand plans change! Many trekkers book “last-minute.” Our policy allows booking up to 24 hours before departure. However, to ensure permit and guide availability, we recommend booking at least a few days ahead. If you do need a last-minute trek, let us know, we’ll do our best to accommodate.

    Trip Extension (After Trek)

If you have extra days after finishing the Short Annapurna Circuit Trek, Nepal has plenty of adventures: spend more time in Pokhara, take a sightseeing Kathmandu Day Tour, temples and heritage sites, or head to the jungle (Chitwan Jungle Safari or Bardia National Park Wildlife safari). You can also go rafting, paragliding in Pokhara, or explore nearby treks. We’re happy to arrange additional tours or hotel nights if you wish.

    Travel Insurance (Recommended)

Travel insurance is mandatory for our treks. It should cover high-altitude trekking (up to 6000m+) and include emergency helicopter evacuation. Medical facilities are limited on the trek; in case of serious illness or injury, evacuation is critical (and very expensive without insurance).

We strongly recommend buying insurance before your trip; carry a copy of the policy and emergency contacts. (Our guides and porters have group insurance, but each traveler must have personal coverage.) For more detailed information about insurance, you can visit this page: Nepal Travel Insurance.

Guides and Porters on the Short Annapurna Circuit Trek

We provide licensed, English-speaking guides who know the trail intimately and carry necessary first-aid and communication gear. Our guides lead small groups (max 6 people per guide) to ensure personalized service. For luggage, we include one porter for every two trekkers. Porters carry about 18 kg each, so you only need a small backpack for essentials. This lets you enjoy the hike without a heavy burden. All guides and porters are paid and insured by us; tipping them is customary (see below).

Your professional trekking team: experienced guide (right) and porters carrying equipment. We provide one guide per 6 trekkers and one porter for every two trekkers to ensure safety and comfort along the trail.

    Tipping Culture in Nepal

Tipping (called “baksheesh”) is not mandatory but is a common way to appreciate good service. Typical guidelines are about 10 to 15% of the trek cost (split among your guide and porters). For example, on a $1,500 trek, a 10% tip would be $150 total. It’s best to carry small USD or NPR notes for tips (guide/porter will help convert if needed). You can tip individually, but many groups tip together at the end. Remember that trekking wages are modest, so tips are greatly appreciated.

A Typical Day on the Short Annapurna Circuit Trek with Thorong La Pass

Each day follows a similar routine:

    • Early morning: Wake by 6-7 am. Have hot tea/coffee in the lodge, then breakfast by 7-8 am.
    • Morning hike: Start hiking around 7:30-8:00 am. Trek for 3-4 hours, gradually gaining altitude. Enjoy the mountain views and stop for breaks and photos.
    • Lunch break: Around noon (10-12 pm), you’ll stop for a packed or lodge lunch at the village along the trail. This is followed by a 1-hour rest.
    • Afternoon hike: Resume walking for another 2-3 hours. This section is usually shorter. Arrive at the next tea-house by 3-4 pm.
    • Evening: Once settled, you can relax, wash up, and maybe chat or play games in the common room. Hot water showers and Wi-Fi (at a charge) may be available. Around 6:30 pm, dinner is served. After dinner, your guide will brief you on the next day’s route. Then it’s lights out by 9-10 pm to rest for the next day.

A morning on the trail: after breakfast the team sets out on foot under clear skies. Each day starts early (7-8 am) and includes a midday lunch break and an afternoon trek before reaching the evening’s tea-house.

    • Exploring the famous Tibetan district of Manang and Mustang.
    • Kali Gandaki Valley, the world’s deepest gorge
    • Exploring Jomsom, Natural hot springs at Tatopani, and a popular tourist hub, Lakeside view in Pokhara.
    • 360° Views of the Annapurna ranges (I, II, IV, etc.), Dhaulagiri, Lamjung Himal, Nilgiri, Chulu West, Chulu East, Thorong Peak, Tukuche Peak
    • Visiting Barge Monastery in Manang

Electricity and Water Service on the Short Annapurna Circuit Trek

Electricity is available at most lodges during the Short Annapurna Circuit Trek. However, it may cost extra (e.g., 100-200 NPR per charge). Charging might be limited (solar or generator power), so carry spare batteries. Boiled/bottled water is sold at lodges (1-3 USD per liter), but we recommend carrying a water purification method (tablets or UV sterilizer) and refilling from tap water when available.

Do not drink untreated river or spring water. We will provide free purification tablets each morning. For personal hygiene, wet wipes and a quick-dry towel can be very handy, as hot showers are a luxury (often only available for $2-$5 per bucket above 3,000m).

Communication on the Short Annapurna Circuit Trek with Thorong La Pass

Connectivity is limited. In lower villages (Besisahar, Manang), lodges may have internet (Wi-Fi or local SIM) for a fee. Above 3,500m (upper Manang and beyond), there is usually no phone signal or internet.

Our guides will carry a satellite phone or radio to communicate daily with base camp. If you need to stay in touch with friends/family, consider buying a Nepal SIM card in Kathmandu (NTC or Ncell); even then, expect patchy coverage. Kathmandu and Pokhara both have good wifi/cell networks.

    Currency Exchange and Personal Expenses

The local currency is the Nepalese Rupee (NPR). You should exchange money in Kathmandu or Pokhara; the airport and banks have the day’s rates. Carry mostly NPR cash for the trek, as credit cards are only accepted in Kathmandu/Pokhara, and ATMs are scarce on the trail. Bring some small bills (100-500 NPR) for tea, tips, and small purchases.

Personal expenses for the Short Annapurna Circuit Trek: Budget about $15-$30 USD per person per day for extras not included. Typical items: extra tea/coffee ($2-3), snacks (instant noodles, chocolate), SIM card recharge, hot showers ($2-5), charging devices, and Wi-Fi. All standard meals and three daily tea/coffee are included, but cold drinks, beer, and extra snacks cost extra. We recommend having at least $200 USD (or equivalent NPR) per person for the entire trek to cover these incidentals.

Porters carry luggage and supplies between remote villages on the Short Annapurna Circuit Trek. (We provide porters and a duffel bag for each pair of trekkers.)

    Luggage and Porter Services

The Short Annapurna Circuit Trek includes porter service (one porter for every two trekkers), so you carry only a light daypack. Each porter can carry up to 18-20 kg, i.e., about 9-10 kg per person. Any excess luggage can be stored for free at our Kathmandu office or hotel. Important: Keep passports, camera, medication, and valuables in your daypack.

All shared group gear and safety equipment are carried by your guides/porters for convenience. If you prefer, you may hire additional porters on the trail for an extra fee.

    Short Annapurna Circuit Trek FAQs

How difficult is the Annapurna Circuit Trek?

The Short Annapurna Circuit Trek is a moderate to difficult level trek. The highest point of this trek is 5,416 meters/ 17,769 feet, which is Thorong La Pass. It is a long walk that goes through hills, villages, forests, and high mountains. You may have to walk for 5 to 7 hours every day. When you trek in high altitude place, the air gets thinner, so it can be hard to breathe and might cause altitude sickness.
