Trek to Upper Mustang Tiji Festival gives you an insight into the old Tibetan culture residing in the realm of the Mustang region. The auspicious festival of Tiji is Celebrated by the local Gurung and Bista communities of upper Mustang.  Since the 15th century, the three days festival is observed by exchanging love and greetings among the communities, wishing for world peace and no natural destruction.

Various deities are worshipped on the very first day of the festival while the second and third days see the presentation of cultural dances. This typical festival carries the Ancient mythology associated with the belief in the reincarnation of Buddhist Lama Dorji Sunu. 

It is believed that Lamaa Dorji Sunu Fought a battle against his demon father that spread epidemics to save the Kingdom of Mustang.  The Tiji festival is also referred to as lunar festival or mid-autumn festival & is held on 31 May To 2nd June.

History of Tiji Festival

  • “Tiji” the name is an abbreviation of the word “Tempa Chirim” which means “Prayer for World Peace”. 
  •  The Tiji festival celebrates the victory of Lord Buddha’s incarnation Dorji Sunu over a demon.
  • The Tiji festival usually takes place around mid-autumn-31 May To 2nd June.
  • Since Tiji is a lunar festival, every year the dates are different.
  • The monks of Lo Manthang “Choedhe” monastery perform ritual dances during the Tiji celebration. 
  • The Tiji festival dances are all organized by the Choede Monastery
