Mera Peak is the highest trekking peak in Nepal towering 6,476m (21,247 ft) above sea level.

Mera Peak climbing is taken as the ground to prepare yourself before the Everest climb. Tenzing Norway Sherpa and Sir Edmund Hillary, the first climbers of Mount Everest started the trend of climbing the Mera peak before, and after the Everest ascent. Since then its popularity is never unhyped; rather, it is increasing year by year.

Mera Peak Climbing is a perfect mixture of Trek and Climb. For most parts of the trip, the journey to Mera Peak is like a regular trek. On the last push to the summit, it becomes a climb.

Expeditions History

  • Mera Peak region was first explored extensively by British Expeditions in Early 50’s Before & after the ascent of Mt. Everest.
  • Team Included : Edmund Hillary, Tenzing Norgay, Eric Shipton & George Lowe
  • In 1953 may 20, Col Jimmy Roberts & Sen Tenzing Made first ascent Of Mera Central.
  • French Climbers Marcel Jolly, G.Baus & L. Honills received the honor to reach the true summit, Mera North in 1975.
  • Some Sources also state that mera peak was climbed on 29 October 1973, Climber included L Limprques, Ang Lhakpa & Two Other Sherpas.
  • Mal Duff & Lan Tattersall made the first ascent of the South west Pillar:Mera Peak(6487m).
  • Mera Peak is classified as trekking peak & it contains 3 main Summits: Mera North(6476m), Mera Central(6461m), & Mera south(6065m).
  • Some people often argue on being smaller trekking summit of Mera, visible as a distant summit form south but not marked on the maps.
  • The Elevation of Mera peak is given as 6654m & is claimed to be highest trekking peak.

Physical fitness:

If you happen to trek Nepal’s topmost Everest Base camp Trek, Mera peak climbing is your next challenge.

Mera peak doesn’t require technical climbing skills but it does require decent level of physical fitness. Climbing is physically demanding & you will be walking through glacier terrain. Expect to walk on glacier for 5-6 hour to scale summit. Other than that, mera peak climbing requires basic level of mountaineering skills like: use of crampons, ice axe etc. Our Sherpa guide will teach some techniques which is plenty. Walk slow, acclimatize, hydrate & eat energetic food you will overcome the summit easily. The straightforward climb makes mera achievable. 

Best time to go Mera Peak:

To scale Mera Summit, a stable weather is must. Even the slight wind could cause a serious damage. Need to avoid rainy season & snowfall season. We recommend climbing mera peak between March-May & October-November. Amid these months, trail is busy & weather is stable as well. which is good for climbing.
