Island Peak (Imja Tse), at an altitude of 6189m/20300ft, is one of the most popular trekking peaks in the world, which lies in the Khumbu/Everest region, at Sagarmatha National Park.

Island Peak is one of the best climbing peaks in Nepal to gain mountaineering experience. Peak climbing itself is thought to be one of the most exciting moments in a lifetime, and can be a true venture when done along with trekking, going through the lifestyle of the communities in the area.

In addition, “Island Peak Climbing” allows every trekker to visit Sagarmatha National Park in Nepal, a World Natural Heritage Site by UNESCO. Not only this, it also fulfills the dreams of many trekkers and climbers who wish to be near Everest, the highest peak in the world.

The Island Peak climbing starts from the Lukla airstrip, which is a wonderful flight through the Himalayas. The journey passes through many Sherpa hamlets, sacred highland monasteries, Everest Base Camp, and Kalapattar to the summit of Island Peak via the ridge of Mt. Lhotse Shar. Climbing Island Peak is a sheer adventure and a big achievement for novice climbers who aim to summit higher peaks, including Everest, in the future.

Useful Information

Permits Required for Island Peak Climbing

A permit is a necessary and essential document issued by the Nepal Government or any authorized body. It especially authorizes a climber to attempt a peak or route. It is illegal to climb any peak without a permit.

For Island Peak Climbing in Nepal, you need to take three permits: Sagarmatha National Park, Local Permit, and Peak Climbing Permit.

  • Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit – It is required to enter Sagarmatha National Park. You can get the permit at the Nepal Tourism Board office, Bhrikutimandap, or at the entry point in Monjo.
  • NPR 3000 per person (foreigners)
  • Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit – It is a local permit issued by the Local Government to enter the area. You can get it at Lukla.
  • NPR 2000 per person (foreigners)
  • Island Peak Climbing Permit – It is issued by the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA). The fee for the Permit depends on the season you choose to climb.
  • Spring – USD 250 (foreigners)
  • Autumn – USD 125 (foreigners)
  • Summer & Winter – USD 70 (foreigners)

NOTE: A garbage deposit fee of US $500 is required to pay to NMA to get the climbing permit. You will get the refunds later as per the NMA provisions.

Best Time to Climb Island Peak

Among the four seasons, the best time to climb is Spring (March-May) and Autumn (September–October). Summer/Monsoon and Winter are considered off-seasons.

Spring is the best and most favorable season for climbers. The weather is stable and dry. Spring is marked by warmer days. The hills get covered with blooming rhododendrons. The weather is also stable, offering you clear and spectacular views of the mountains.

The chance of snowfall is less, and you can enjoy nature at its best. Autumn is another preferred season. The season shares similar features with Spring.

The weather is dry and stable, and the visibility is great. But the weather is chillier compared to Spring, and it gets colder and colder as days pass (so Spring is preferred more for climbing, whereas Autumn is preferred more for trekking).

The winter season is off-season due to unfavorable climatic conditions. This season is the driest and coldest. There will be thick snowfall, and the path becomes difficult to navigate due to the thick snow and freezing cold. During the Summer/Monsoon, the weather is unpredictable.

It gets hot and humid, and it rains a lot with poor visibility. There is also a high chance of landslides and floods.

Physical Fitness Required for Climbing Island Peak Nepal

Island Peak Climbing is considered to be moderately challenging and can be attempted by people with little or no mountaineering experience. However, it is a high-altitude adventure in extreme terrain. So, it is important to remember that physical fitness is required.

Weeks of regular exercise to boost your stamina and endurance are required prior to the adventure. Every human body is different, and how your body adapts to the altitude and new environment is different. So, besides being physically fit, you should also take care of your mental well-being to enjoy the whole experience fully.

Island Peak Climbing Guide and Porter

It is difficult to climb a peak without the help of guides and porters. Without guides and porters, NMA will not give you permission for peak climbing. Guides and porters are an important part of climbing. Climbing a peak is a technical activity, and while climbing, you need to learn different techniques.

Guides will train you to use ropes and other climbing gear properly. They will also show you the routes and help you in an emergency. Porters will help you carry your bags and support materials while climbing.

Accommodation During Climb Island Peak Nepal

During the trek, you will stay in local lodges or tea houses. They will provide you with comfortable rooms on a twin-sharing basis, and there won’t be an attached bathroom in most cases.

Since there won’t be any heater or spare blanket normally, we suggest you bring a sleeping bag to keep your body warm. Once you reach the base camp, you will stay in tented camps.

Food and Water in Island Peak Climbing

During trekking, you will eat at lodges and tea houses. You have the option of a modest range of Nepali, Continental, and Tibetan food. During climbing days, your food will be prepared by your team. You don’t need to worry about food and water, as you will be provided plenty of healthy food and water during your trip.

But you should remember that you have to eat and drink properly to gain the required energy. As you gain altitude, you may lose appetite, but you have to push yourself, as keeping yourself well nourished and hydrated is really important. You should drink about 4-6 liters of water every day. Staying hydrated will help you to acclimatize properly.

Communication/Network Services on Island Peak Climbing

During the trek, you will find internet services at lodges, but you have to pay some extra charges. You can use NTC and NCELL mobile and network services. They work properly in lower altitudes but tend to have a weaker connection as you climb higher. Everest Link is more popular nowadays in the Everest region, as it has good signal strength at higher altitudes as well.

Electricity on Island Peak Climbing

Electricity is available throughout the trail. But you can’t get it lavishly. For charging your device, you can get the facility in lodges and tea houses with some extra charge. So, it’s better to bring your own power bank.

Clothing and Gears Required for Island Peak Climbing

Proper clothing and gear ensure the success of your trip. You need to pack all the things that are necessary for you. The recommended list is:

  • Rope

Everest Base Camp Trek & Island Peak May 2018 • Couples Recently back from successfully summiting Island Peak in Nepal with Access Nepal. We highly recommend this trek. It's not the easiest but with a good level of fitness it's a great adventure. The trip includes a trek to Everest Base Camp and a great climb with ropes and crampons on Island Peak itself. Our trekking guide Prakash picked us up at arrival at Kathmandu airport and Sandhana (travel adviser) ran us through the trip logistics before we set off the following day. With very helpful guides (trekking & climbing) and a porter supporting us throughout our trek, everything fell into place and all we had to do was concentrate on enjoying our trip. It was great to walk through the Everest region and summiting Island Peak was definitely the highlight. We can't thank our Access Nepal enough for helping us have a successful trip and ensuring all the logistics fell into place, even when the weather caused problems getting into and out of Lukla airport. The trek's schedule is well structured to minimise any difficulties with altitude and everyday our guide couldn't do enough to ensure we enjoyed our trek, were well accommodated and weren't suffering issues with altitude. If you're thinking of trekking in Nepal we strongly recommend going with Access Nepal.

Island Peak Climb Sep 2019 I had the pleasure of trekking with Access Nepal to Mt. Everest Base Camp in Sept. 2017 and was very pleased. When I decided to Climb Island Peak in 2019 I naturally went back to Access Nepal. From the planning stages to my orientation meeting in Kathmandu, my trek coordinator, Sadhana, was always available to answer my questions. She was very helpful and prompt always getting back to me with answers the next day. She even helped me customize the trip by shortening the itinerary and adding a day of rock climbing. When bad whether resulted in cancelled flights to Lukla, Sadhana and my guide worked hard to find alternative arrangements eventually securing a reasonably priced helicopter ride to keep us on schedule.
