The Annapurna Circuit Trek is known as a trekker’s paradise.
This 16-day Annapurna Circuit Trek is a Himalayan adventure that circles Nepal’s Annapurna Massif. Each part of this trek has something to give, from subtropical valleys up to the high alpine heights of the Thorong La Pass (5,416 m). The soaring peaks like Annapurna I (8,091 m), Dhaulagiri I (8,167 m), and Mt. Machhapuchhre (6,993 m) greet trekkers along the trail.
Nature goes all out as you walk through diverse landscapes, dense rhododendron, oak forests, and high-altitude deserts. The Annapurna Conservation Area is home to 1,226 plant species and 101 mammal species. If you’re lucky enough, you might spot rare wildlife (snow leopard, musk deer, and Himalayan pheasants). Exploring the traditional villages of Gurung, Thakali, Manang, and Tibetan is another great chance to understand the simple Himalayan lifestyle.
The Annapurna Circuit Trek takes trekkers to a 230 km loop through one of the wildest regions of Nepal. The adventure starts from Kathmandu (1,440m) with a relaxing sightseeing tour of this living museum. The Annapurna Circuit Trek officially begins from the low foothills of Besishahar (760 m). The trail climbs slowly, surrounded by terraced fields and green valleys.
The route takes trekkers through traditional Gurung villages (e.g., Bhulbhule, Jagat) and Thakali hamlets (Ngadi, Tukuche). As you ascend higher, the surroundings and climate change from subtropical bamboo forests and terraced farms to pine and birch woodlands, rhododendron thickets, and eventually sparse alpine meadows.
After Manang (3,540 m), the Annapurna Circuit Trek gets more challenging as you cross the high mountain pass, Thorong La Pass (5,416 m). The pass is the highest point of the Annapurna Circuit Trek. Along the way, trekkers can enjoy the view (Annapurna, Gangapurna, and Tilicho peaks) as Himalayan panoramas unfurl.
Crossing the Thorong High Pass, the descent journey takes you to the Muktinath temple (3,800 m). It’s a well-respected Hindu-Buddhist pilgrimage site known for the eternal flame and holy waters.
The Annapurna Circuit Trek goes down to Tatopani (2,600 m), famous for the natural hot springs. Here, trekkers will relax and soak up the hot springs. Passing through the windswept valleys (Kagbeni, Marpha), the hike to Tatopani is beautiful. Trek continues descending toward the Ghorepani (2,874 m) for the sunrise view over the Annapurna range from Poonhill (3,210 m) and finally concludes with a drive to Pokhara, then Kathmandu.
Our Annapurna Circuit Trek cost covers all your basic needs. The package is all-inclusive and provide full support throughout the trek. From arrival in Kathmandu, accomodation, meals, transportation, porters, to highly experienced English-speaking and licnesed guides, all the details are carefully made. All the listed dates are fixed departures and guaranteed to run. We operate both group and private trek all year round for the Annapurna Circuit Trek. If the dates listed in the calendar doesn't suit you, please feel free to contact us. We're happy to customize a trek that fits your schedule. Group discounts are available if you join a group. We recommend early booking to secure your spot!
The Annapurna Circuit Trek begins once you arrive at Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan Airport. We provide an airport pickup and drop-off service in a private tourist vehicle. After your arrival, representative staff will guide you to the hotel. All the processes with luggage and hotel check-in, Access Nepal Tours and Trekking will assist you.
After getting refreshed, we have a pre-trek briefing. We provide a final brief about trekking details (permits, gear, safety tips). In the evening (by 6:00 to 7:00 PM), we gather for a welcome dinner. Hosted by Access Nepal Tours and Trekking, dinner is traditional style, along with a local performance (traditional music and dance). The dinner is a great opportunity to learn about Nepali culture and get to know other fellow trekkers.
In case of late arrival, pre-trek briefing postpones to Day 2.
The Annapurna Circuit with ABC trek is a teahouse trek. Throughout the trek, you will stay at a teahouse which has twin-sharing bedrooms or dormitory-style rooms with shared bathrooms. The teahouses are family-run lodges which provide a comfortable stay. As we trek higher, basic services become simpler: hot water and Wi-Fi are rarely available (a bucket of hot water can be provided with extra cost). Nonetheless, rooms are generally clean with warm beds and blankets.
On the 16-day Trek, we provide 3 nights in a standard hotel in Kathmandu and 12 nights in lodges and teahouses along the trek. The rooms in Kathmandu are twin-sharing, which gives you comfort before and after your trek.
Accommodation options are limited (especially in peak trekking seasons in Nepal) in Annapurna region due to remote location. If you want to upgrade the accomodation and service level, please inform us beforehand, so that we can arrange it accorodingly.
One of the essential parts of the Annapurna Circuit with ABC trek is taking proper nutrition. Supporting your body during high-altitude ascent is crucial. Meals rich in carbohydrates and proteins are highly recommended. Local delicacies are not only more hygienic but also nutritionally beneficial.
Our packages include 16 breakfasts, 15 lunches, and 16 dinners (including welcome and farewell dinners) during the trek, served on a full-board (main course) basis. Seasonal fruits, tea, and coffee are also included.
All the food provided by teahouses is home-cooked meals, which are organic and hygienic. Breakfast choices often include porridge, eggs, pancakes, or Tibetan-style bread with jam. Lunch and dinner are always dal bhat (rice with lentil soup and vegetable curry), it’s a Nepali staple dish (served in family-style with unlimited refills). Snacks like instant noodles, energy bars, chocolate, etc, are available at an extra cost.
Sample Menu (Manang/Thorong La area): Vegetable soup; rice/roti with lentil curry, potato curry, seasonal greens; yogurt or curried meat; tea or hot chocolate.
Other common dishes available during the Circuit Trek are:
The trek has a wide range of vegetarian and vegan options available. If you have dietary restrictions (gluten-free or food allergies, etc.), please let us know in advance, so that we can arrange it accordingly.
Porter services (1 for 2 trekkers) are included in the package. The total Annapurna Circuit trek cost covers personal expenses and insurance of guides and porters. The trekkers are allowed up to 20 to 25 kg of personal gear (duffel bag) for the porter. If the weight limit is exceeded, you may have to pay an additional amount. We provide one porter for every two trekkers. A duffel bag is provided as a souvenir, so you only need to carry a light daypack (water, jacket, camera, valuables).
The Annapurna Circuit Trek itinerary doesn’t include domestic flights (Kathmandu-Jomsom), therefore, there is no airlines weight limit. But if you choose to customize the itinerary with a flight, they allows upto 15 kg including carry-on.
Trekkers are advised to carry their belongings under the porter’s weight limit. If it exceeds, you may require an extra porter. Keep your valuable belongings with you, and for other unneeded gear, we can keep it securely at the hotels in Kathmandu. Keep your copy of your passport/photos in your daypack.
For safety purposes and convenience, all shared group gear, emergency supplies, and communications equipment are carried by guides/porters.
The Annapurna Circuit Trek is one of the most popular trekking destinations, which also means basic facilities, but by mountain standards, due to remoteness. Accomodation (as above) and teahouses provide western toilets in the lower region, but above 3,400 m, facilities become scarce and limited. Toilet bathrooms come in shared. We suggest you carry wipes and hand sanitizer. Given below are the trek packing list of Annapurna Circuit Trek:
Bring a good-quality daypack (25-30 L) to carry personal items like water, snacks, toiletries, and others. Throughout the trek, layering for clothing is highly suggested.
Teahouses have warm beds, but at night are cold in the mountains. Therefore, a sleeping bag (rated to -10°C or lower) is highly recommended for a comfortable sleep. If you need one or forget to bring or buy, Access Nepal Tours Trekking can lend you for the Annapurna Circuit Trek free of cost.
Pack travel-sized toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, biodegradable soap, hand sanitizer, toilet paper, wipes, hand sanitizer, small towel). High-spectrum and SPF sunscreen, lip balm, and sunglasses (100% UV) are crucial. Sunburn is quick at high altitudes due to strong UV rays. A headlamp with extra batteries is needed (for early mornings and power outages). Carry a water bottle (purification tablets are provided) (Alternatively, lodges sell bottled water or boiled water for $1–3/liter, which adds up.).
Carry a valid passport with photocopies, Nepal Tourist Visa, passport-sized photos (for permits and SIM card), and travel insurance (mandatory). Safely keep them inside a waterproof pouch. Carry enough Nepali rupees in cash for personal expenses. ATMs are available in Kathmandu and in some places, but they are limited and mostly won’t work properly. Estimate $20 to $3o per day for personal expenses and tips.
To capture the great views of the Annapurna Circuit Trek, bring a camera, phone, chargers, and spare batteries. Electricity is limited as you climb higher. To charge a phone/camera, it costs you over $1. The best solution is to carry a power bank and extra batteries.
Buy a local SIM card (NTC or Ncell) with data (costs $5 to $10 for a good pack). It is enough to give you coverage during the trek (expect some poor connection as you climb higher, especially at high camp/pass).
Wi-Fi is limited once you leave Kathmandu. Some teahouses provide Wi-Fi for an additional amount ($2 -$5 per day or on a per-hour basis). However, they are not reliable, and speeds are slow.
Trekking poles (to ease knee strain) and Gaiters for neck and legs are highly recommended. For personal use, carry a small first-aid kit: blister care (Compeed), painkillers (acetaminophen/ibuprofen), altitude sickness medication if prescribed, bandages, and any personal meds. We provide a group first-aid kit including Diamox (acetazolamide) as a precaution.
What Not to Forget: Travel Insurance, Passport, Passport-sized photos (for permits), enough cash (NPR), sunscreen, sunglasses, camera, and toiletries.
Water is available in unlimited but it must be treated. We provide free water purification tablets, and teahouses also sell boiled water, but it costs extra (usually costing $1- $3 per liter at high altitude).
Along the Annapurna Circuit Trail, there are government-installed water taps/spigots you can fill your bottle for free, and use purification tablets. Each time you refill, use purification tablets.
The package also included 3 cups of tea/coffee per day. You can also bring your own instant tea/coffee sachets to stay hydrated cheaply.
Hygiene: Bathrooms come on a sharing basis. In the lower region, they come in western-style, and in the lower villages, it’s squat latrines higher up. Bring toilet paper and hand sanitizer (most lodges do not have soap).
Pack a wipe for refreshing on long days. Hot showers are a luxury at high altitude; they are limited and expensive. They run on limited gas or solar-heated water. You have to pay $2 to $5 for one bucket, and in winter, they may not be available.
All foreign nationals (except Indian, Bhutanese, Maldivian, Pakistani, and some others) can get a Nepal Tourist Visa on arrival. For easier processing, you can also get it by filling out the Nepal Online Tourist Visa Form. The visa fees are allocated depending on the day: USD $30 for 15 days, $50 for 30 days, and $125 for 90 days. Indian citizens won’t require a visa.
Bring a cash to obtain a visa on arrival at Kathamndu Airport as cards/cheques are not accepted. To extend the stay fees are the same, plus $25 extra for multiple entries. We wil also guide you through any visa questions.
For the safety and conservation of nature, to trek the Annapurna Circuit, trekkers need permits. There are two permits required for this Circuit trek in the Annapurna region:
As of 2023, TIMS card can be issued by registered agencies and guides only. Upon booking with Access Nepal Tours and Trekking. all the permits cost is incuded in the pacakge and will obtain it on behalf of you.
A key note: If you are tarveling outside of Kathmandu (e.g. to Tibet or Bhutan) and return, you have to pay double-entry visa (costs $25).
Trekking in high altitudes is physically demanding and has the risk of altitude sickness or injuries. In those cases, emergency evacuation is urgently needed. Therefore, travel insurance is strongly recommended with coverage over 6,000m and should include helicopter emergency evacuation.
Emergency evacuation at high elevation is costly, so don’t leave it to chance. The guides and porters included in the package carry group insurance, but your coverage is your own responsibility. Moreover, travel insurance is mandatory required by government to trek in Nepal. For more detailed information regarding travel insurance, go here: Nepal Travel Insurance.
We suggest you to carry copies of travel insurance and other essentail documents with you throughout the trek.
The highest point of the Annapurna Circuit Trek is 5,416m (Thorong La Pass). At this height, the risk of getting altitude sickness is high. If you ascend fast, altitude sickness (Acute Mountain Sickness, AMS) can affect anyone. The symptoms can be seen within 6/24 hours of gaining altitude. The common symptoms of AMS are weakness, nausea, dizziness, headache, loss of appetite, and difficulty sleeping.
We suggest that you immediately inform the guide if you feel any of these symptoms. Stop ascending! Take a rest and hydrate. Descending just a few meters can cure the mild symptoms.
Our guides are first aid trained. Throughout the trek they will closely monitor you with frequent check up and they also carry a basic first aid kit (diamox included).
We follow the “climb high, sleep low” rule to trek safely. Slow ascent and acclimatization are the key tips to prevent altitude sickness. Our Annapurna Circuit Trek Itinerary includes an acclimatization day at Manang (3,540m) to prevent AMS.
We advise taking it easy, avoiding alcohol, and sleeping pills. Drink plenty of water and eat light, carb-rich meals. We carry a first-aid kit and can administer medication if needed.
Mild altitude sickness can be cured after some rest, but severe symptoms are risky. If symptoms are bad, like shortness of breath, chest tightness, confusion, severe weakness, or difficulty walking, immediate descent is required. Never ignore any symptoms. Communicate with your guide about how you feel.
Trekkers are closely monitored throughout the trek and maintain communication (by satellite phone if needed) for emergencies. In a dire situation, we will help arrange a helicopter evacuation, which will be covered by your insurance.
With proper acclimatization, walking gradually, and good physical fitness, the Annapurna Circuit Trek can be complete by everyone sucessfully.
The best time to trek the Annapurna Circuit is in Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November). These are the peak seasons for trekking in Nepal. This time of month offers clear skies, dry trails, warm days, and cool nights. Spring brings colourful trails dotted with rhododendron and wild flowers where whereas Autumn brings the crisp air with great visibility (snow cover is minimal on passes).
Choosing the best season for trekking in Nepal is a crucial part. To enjoy the trip to the fullest, we recommend you travel during the peak season for trekking in Nepal.
The monsoon season (June to August) is not a pleasant season for trekking. It brings rainfall, especially at lower and mid elevations. It is possible to do a trek in early monsoon (June), but there is a risk of slippery trails and cloudy views. The trail gets muddy with leeches on the lower paths.
Winter (December to February) offers a great experience, but Circuit Trek is not possible due to the high mountain pass (Thorong La Pass at 5,416m). Similarly, teahouses also close above Manang in this season. Daytime is tolerable with (0-10°C), but nights plummet to (-10°C or colder). The snow usually blocks Thorong La.
Pack warm layers of extra clothes beacuse in any season, weather on the high pass is cold and unstable.
A typical day on the Annapurna Circuit Trek looks like this:
Note: The most challenging day is Day 10, crossing Thorong La (long climb then descent). We plan for 8 hours that day, departing very early. Walk at your own pace on the steep sections and help each other. Our team carries snacks and extra water just in case. Every trekker’s experience is different, but our aim is that each of you completes the Circuit safely and with unforgettable memories.
The Annapurna Circuit is classified as moderate to strenuous difficulty. You don’t need to be an elite mountaineer, but a good level of fitness and trekking experience is strongly recommended. Over 16 days, you cover 160-230 km total, with daily hikes of 5-7 hours on varied terrain (some steep ascents/descents, rocky or icy patches). The key challenge is the high altitude: the pass is 5,416 m.
We advise training before your trip. Cardiovascular conditioning (running, cycling, or stairclimbing) and leg strength (hiking or squats) help immensely. If you can comfortably hike 5-6 hours on hilly terrain at home, you’ll handle the trek more easily. Even then, the altitude slows everyone down. On the trail, the healthy rhythm is a steady, unhurried pace: 30 minutes walking, 10-minute rest. Listen to your body, drink lots of water, and keep eating. Energy is crucial.
Our guides are experienced at adjusting the pace for the group. We also include regular acclimatization stops: not just the designated rest day, but also a 15-20 minute break each hour while hiking. All participants must be medically fit; certain conditions (heart, lung) may make high trekking unsafe.
Summary: The trek involves some steep climbs (e.g. multiple staircases, 6-8 hrs continuous uphill on Thorong day) and long distances. With preparation and the right gear, most reasonably fit adults can complete the Circuit. Our goal is to ensure everyone finishes safely, we won’t force anyone to push beyond their limits.
While our package is all-inclusive (transport, permits, guide/porter, meals, lodging), you should budget for personal expenses. Typical extras include: snacks, hot drinks, tips, Wi-Fi, additional gear rental, etc. On the trail, plan on about US$15-$30 per person per day for these incidentals. Here’s a breakdown:
Charging devices: $1-2 per charge.
We strongly advise carrying Nepalese Rupees (NPR) for these. ATMs exist in Kathmandu, Pokhara, and in remote towns like Manang and Jomsom. However, there are not many ATMs on the trail. Between Tatopani and Jomsom, banks/ATMs are scarce or non-existent. To be safe, withdraw sufficient NPR (or USD cash to exchange) in Pokhara and Manang if needed. Credit cards are not accepted on the trek. Tip: Small Nepali coins/notes (100-500 NPR) are useful for small payments.
It is customary (but not mandatory) to tip your guides and porters as thanks. A common guideline is about 10-15% of the total package cost shared among your trekking team. (For example, if your trek costs $1,500, a 10% tip is $150, split between your guide and porters.) Our agency will advise you on standard tip amounts. It’s best to prepare tip money in cash (USD or NPR) before starting the trail, as you may reach the point of tipping after Pokhara.
Currency: 1 USD = 130 NPR (always check current rates). Major cards work at Kathmandu/Pokhara ATMs, but beyond that, only cash. Keep some smaller NPR bills/coins for purchases under 500 NPR ($4).
The Annapurna Circuit is as much a cultural journey as a natural one. The region’s inhabitants are warm and diverse.
Throughout your trek, remember to respect local culture: ask permission before photographing people or entering religious sites. Simple gestures, greeting with “Namaste” or “Tashi Delek”, trying some local food, joining villagers in their daily routines (like plowing fields or prayer ceremonies), go a long way. Trekking through these villages offers a unique opportunity to see centuries-old Himalayan traditions that few outside Nepal ever witness.
If time is limited, shorter versions of the Annapurna Circuit highlight the same epic scenery in condensed form:

Annapurna Trek - March-April 2024 Apr 2024 • Friends We did the Annapurna trek from Besi Sahar, going up to Tilicho Lake, crossing Thorung La to Muktinath and ending with the climb from Tatopani to Ghorepani. The organization was impeccable, our guide Devman has 18 years of experience and it shows. He is kind, attentive and capable of leading a huge group of 38 people plus about twenty porters and auxiliary guides. Thanks to him, the entire group passed the altitude stages without any problem. Highly recommended.

Annapurnas and Chitwan National Park Apr 2024 • Friends April, 2024. Group. The trip we took with Access Nepal was magnificent: the Annapurna Circuit and the Chiwan National Park. Both the agency staff, with Sadhanna in charge, and the guides on the route, Devman, Bicash and Shuresh, were always attentive to solve any problem in a caring and efficient manner. They perfectly planned the routes and our daily life so that the entire group could progressively acclimatize to the altitude and effort, so that no one suffered any type of problem and that despite the hardness of the route. The hotels and food in Kathmandu, Pokhara and Chitwan are unbeatable. The mountain lodges met our expectations despite the precariousness that these accommodations usually have. The scheduled visits and tours were very interesting. And above. We were lucky with the weather and we thoroughly enjoyed the incredible settings. We had already done the Lantang Valley with them before and we knew of their effectiveness. In short, lucky to have traveled with them. We will repeat in new adventures. .

Unbeatable experience Mar 2024 • Friends I did the Annapurnas trek with my group from Valencia. And I return delighted. Everything very well organized. The guides and porters of 10, a very hard job for them. Everyone is always very helpful and attentive to all of us. They provided us with bags and feathers for whoever needed them, which were perfectly clean and in good condition. The visits we made in Kathmandu, Pokhara and surrounding areas were also well organized. In short, a very pleasant experience, at all times I have felt cared for and in good hands. A big thank you to the entire Access Nepal team. I hope to have a new experience with them soon. 💚🧡🩵💙❤️💛💜🩷🇳🇵🇳🇵🇳🇵🇳🇵

Hi All, I had the absolute pleasure to do the Annapurna circuit with Access Nepal tours. It was a awesome experience and I cannot wait to come back to Nepal again to do Everest Base camp with them. Most of your administration and tour organisation is all through Sadhana. She is a lovely lady who is very dedicated to her work and the people which chose Access Nepal. The quality of her customer service is equal to her passion. She is very busy, dealing with everyone's tours and also being a full time mother. Other than my email interactions and a few meetings with Sadhana in Kathmandu, most of my time was spent with PN, my guide, and the porter who was supplied to help me along the trek. The Nepalese guides are incredible people. PN made me feel safe and in control of what I wanted to do and see the whole time. I was walking at a faster pace then the schedule so PN gave me a few options on places to stay which did not disappoint. He taught me a lot about the Nepalese culture, language and history along the way. He was very funny and always put my safety and well-being first. I left the tour with 2 very close friends in Nepal and I will forever have great memories of my trekking experience in such a beautiful and culturally in depth country. Thank you Access Nepal. I will be back again soon!
