Overview

Tsum Valley, located in the Manaslu region, is a secluded valley that offers some extraordinary Himalayan views that you’ll get nowhere else. Situated in one of the most remote areas of Nepal, the valley is quite low-crowded and less visited, quite untouched. It lies just in the middle of Mt Manaslu to the south and the Tibetan border to the north.

Nicknamed the ‘Valley of Happiness’ and the ‘Hidden Valley’, the Tsum Valley trek takes you to one of the most spiritual regions. Sitting in the shadows of Ganesh Himal, the trek invites you to the region where you’ll observe several monasteries and, traditional way of life. The people of the Tsum Valley are referred to as Tsumbas, and they largely follow Tibetan-style Buddhism.

Tsum Valley, a secluded valley in the northern reaches of Nepal, is one of the most remote areas of the country. The remoteness and inaccessibility of this place have kept it untouched by modernity. Located in the Manaslu region, Tsum Valley lies between Mount Manaslu to the south and the Tibetan border to its north.

The trek moves on from the very popular Manaslu Circuit and enters an isolated valley. It is filled with pristine landscapes and ancient gompas, following a similar route to the Manaslu Circuit Trek. The journey begins with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Soti Khola.

The route moves towards the Budhi Gandaki River, crossing several villages where Tibetan culture is strong. Then the trail takes a shift from the main Manaslu circuit route from Lokpa, taking you into the most awaited valley. Some of the precious monuments that you’ll experience on the journey are Mu Gompa, Rachen Gompa, etc.

The Tsum Valley Trek itinerary offers an extraordinary experience for trekkers, with towering peaks, dense forests, and deep canyons. The trek is a paradise for those seeking both adventure and tranquility. The trail leading to Tsum Valley is especially interesting, with trekkers crossing cantilever or wall bridges constructed on the rock faces.

Throughout the trek, you’ll get a glimpse of the rhododendron forests, different exotic wildlife, deep canyons, and stunning views of the mountains. The overall distance we’ll cover will be around 364km.

    Useful Information

    Arrival & Welcome

Upon your arrival in Kathmandu, a representative will greet you at the airport and guide you throughout the journey. From transfers to your accommodations and trek preparation, we’ll ensure a seamless and stress-free start to your Himalayan adventure.

Which mountains can you see in the Tsum Valley?

During the Tsum Valley trek, you get plenty of mountain views. Here are some of them:

    • Ganesh Himal
    • Shringi Himal
    • Boudha Himal
    • Himalchuli
    • Kiyong Peak
    • Sar Peak

How are the roads/routes on the Tsum Valley Trek?

For the most part, the Tsum Valley trek goes through a rugged trekking trail with some decent motorable roads at the lower altitudes. On the first and last day of the trek, you’ll be travelling via a private vehicle.

The itinerary is made in such a way that you’ll pass through quiet paths filled with natural beauty, far from the crowded roads. After surpassing Philim, the trek moves from the Manaslu circuit towards the very sacred and less discovered Tsum Valley.

No doubt, this region is very special, giving you unforgettable memories and experiences. Additionally, you’ll get to know more about Tibetan culture and the lifestyle of locals, too.

Accommodation on the Tsum Valley Trek

Throughout the Tsum Valley trek, you’ll stay in comfortable teahouses. For this 16-day trek, you’ll stay 15 nights at the best teahouses/lodges in the trekking regions.

The rooms are well-equipped with comfortable mattresses, pillows, and blankets. In the lower-altitude villages, you’ll enjoy twin-sharing rooms with shared bathrooms.

You can find western-style toilets at the lower elevations, but as you climb, the facilities will be more basic. In the upper regions, bathrooms are basically outside the teahouse. And instead of western-style toilets, there will be asian-style squat toilets.

You’ll also have the facility of hot showers in some areas. However, it might charge you around USD $ 2 to 5 per shower.

Regardless, the warmth and hospitality of the local people will make up for the simplicity of the facilities.

    Food/Meals & Drinks

Tsum Valley and the people, Tsumbas, are strongly influenced by Tibetan culture. So, meals on this trek consist of hearty Nepalese and Tibetan dishes and some foreign cuisine. However, the teahouses have a variety of food included in their menu.

You can find traditional Nepali Dal Bhaat, regional food such as Gyuma, Tsampa, Yurla, Balep, Tibetan bread, Butter tea, etc, and some foreign cuisine like Pasta and Spaghetti.

The food is healthy, wholesome, and ideal for trekking at such high altitudes. There are plenty of options too for vegetarians. Hot drinks such as ginger tea, milk tea, etc, are also available to keep you warm and pumped up for the journey.

Our Tsum Valley trek package includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner with a cup of tea or coffee per person.

While on the trail, we strictly recommend you not consume any alcohol while you are on the trek, as it can leave you dehydrated, ruining your overall trekking experience.

Drinking Water on the Tsum Valley trek

During the Tsum valley trek, you’ve to drink plenty of water. Hydration is key when you’re trekking at such a high altitude. Thereby, staying hydrated is essential.

You’ve to carry a reusable water bottle with purification tablets. We suggest you drink a total of 3 to 4 liters of water a day. You can buy water purification pills from the shops in Thamel.

We don’t recommend you to drink tap water or water from streams in Nepal. Although they may look clean and clear from the outside but you can’t be sure. This is why it is best to bring purifying tablets.

Best Time to do Tsum Valley Trek in Nepal

Like every trekking destination in Nepal, the ideal seasons for the Tsum Valley trek are spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November). During these months, you’ll enjoy clear skies, mild temperatures, and clear panoramic mountain views.

    March to May (Spring)

One of the best times to trek to the Tsum Valley is the Spring season. The weather at this time is clear, allowing you to catch the stunning views of the Himalayas. The temperatures are also quite decent, not too hot, not too cold, and the views are majestic.

Because of the ideal weather conditions and the best trekking experience, many of the trekkers prefer to choose this time for the Tsum Valley trek. Not to forget, this is also the season when you’ll see rhododendron flowers blooming, adding to the beauty even more.

    September to November (Autumn)

Alongside spring, autumn is also an ideal season for the Tsum Valley trek. The weather remains favourable with mild cold, making it a perfect trekking climate. The temperature can reach up to 20 degrees in the daytime. However, at night it can drop up to 5 degrees.

Arrive in the November season for the trek, and you will be greeted with gorgeous views of the peaks, and the trail conditions are good as well. The weather remains warm, clear, allowing you to make the most out of the trek.

Tsum Valley Trek Difficulty and Preparation

The difficulty level of Tsum Valley is considered moderately challenging. It is one of the remote trekking areas in Nepal. Tsum Valley Trek does require a good level of fitness and strong mental preparedness.

This trek involves walking around glacial valleys, steep routes, and high passes, which are common on this trail. Therefore, regular cardio and hiking practice will help you build the stamina you need for the trek.

The best is to perform daily hikes of 5–7 hours over different types of terrain, including steep ascents, rocky paths, and narrow trails. You can practice hiking with a backpack beforehand, which helps you get accustomed to carrying some weight while on the route.

Alongside physical preparation, you must invest in building mental resilience too, with the mindfulness meditation sessions and breathing exercises. Mental strength is equally important in these types of treks.

    Altitude & Acclimatization

Though the highest point is about 3,700 meters at Mu Gompa, it’s still important to acclimatize to avoid altitude sickness. Altitude sickness can affect anyone with or without proper fitness.

Therefore, acclimatization is very crucial while trekking anywhere above 2500 meters. With Access Nepal, this trek ascends gradually, allowing your body to adjust accordingly. You should stay hydrated and take enough rest to minimize the risks.

Our main priority or goal is to ensure your safety and comfort throughout the trek. We have experienced guides who know the trail conditions and the specific region very well.

You don’t have to worry, as they can identify the early signs of altitude sickness and can adjust the pack accordingly. Access Nepal Tour and Trekking, make sure you are properly acclimatized, and schedule rest days so that your body can adjust to the altitude.

The gradual elevation gain makes the acclimatization process even better, significantly reducing the chances of altitude sickness.

What You Should Do To Prevent Altitude Sickness

    • You must stay hydrated by drinking at least 3 litres of water.
    • Eat healthy, nutritious meals in a good amount, including hot soup.
    • Keep in check regarding your body’s responses to the altitude.

    • Acclimatize properly and take rest days.
    • Don’t smoke or drink alcohol during the trekking period.
    • Don’t forget to take a first aid kit containing essential medication.

    What You Should Not Do

    • Climbing up high too quickly isn’t a good approach. Avoid walking too quickly and do not ignore your rhythm of breathing.
    • Avoid overcommitting yourself, which might risk altitude sickness or injury.
