Historic and Cultural Significance

Shivapuri National Park

The Shivapuri was initially allocated as a watershed and wildlife reserve in 1976 AD and later officially turned into a National Park in 2002 AD. The Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park now covers around 159 sq km after 15 sq km of Nagarjun Forest was added in 2009 AD. Many numerous sites including Shiva Temple, Nagi Gumba, Bagdwar, Jamchen Vijaya Stupa, and Tarebhir hold the historic significance. You can get your eyes on remarkable waterfalls such as Sundarijal, Dhap Dam, and Jhor.

Bishnudwar

The park has a huge importance because it holds the main source of water in Kathmandu and the main origin of the major rivers Bagmati and Bishnumati, which flow from Bagdwar and Bishnudwar. The river is holy to both Hindus and Buddhists. The word Bishnudwar is related to the history of Lord Bishnu. The word “Bishnu” means “Protector” and the word “dwar” means the “opening”. There is a small Bishnu Temple near the source of the river Bishnupaduka. The river flowing from the point is considered holy, and many years ago, devotees used to take a dip in the holy river before starting anything auspicious.
