The Mardi Himal Trek is an adventure into the Annapurna foothills, where you will be rewarded with golden rays of sunrise lightning up the sky above Machhapuchhre and Mardi Himal in fiery hues. Trekking through flowering rhododendron forests and welcoming Gurung villages, even a short 10-day adventure on this trail feels like a lifetime of Himalayan wonder.
The Mardi Himal Trek is one of the popular trekking routes in Nepal, located in the Annapurna region near Pokhara. The trek begins from the beautiful hilltop village of Phedi (or nearby Kande) and passes through Dhampus and other traditional villages. The Mardi Himal Trek route climbs gradually through green pine and rhododendron forest, then breaks into alpine meadows as it slowly ascends toward High Camp (3,580m) and the Mardi Himal Base Camp (4,500m). The panoramic view of Himchuli (6,441m), Annapurna III (7,555m), Gangapurna (7,454m), Machhapuchhre (6,997m), and Mardi (5,553m) from the top of the Mardi Base Camp is a blessing.
Along the trek to Mardi Himal, you’ll be greeted by the breathtaking views of Machhapuchhre and the Annapurna massif. Unlike Everest Base Camp and Annapurna Base Camp, the Mardi Himal Trek is less crowded. The well-maintained trails offer a great experience. The great part is Mardi Himal trek is fairly budget-friendly compared to longer expeditions.
The highest point of the Mardi Himal Trek altitude is 4,500m (the Base Camp/viewpoint). The trekkers will climb partway up to the Base Camp only (meanwhile, Mardi Himal’s height is 5,587m) and return. The Mardi Himal Trek is a moderate-level trek and suitable for physically fit adventurous souls.
On average, the hiking distances are relatively short, like 5 to 6 hours per day. After climbing above 3,000m, the trail gets steep, making little more exhausting. Therefore, good physical condition is required to walk those long uphill sections. Most importantly, the trekkers should walk slowly to acclimatize and reach the Mardi Himal Base Camp Trek safely.
The Mardi Himal Trek is a beginner-friendly trek and much easier the other trekking routes like the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek, Annapurna Circuit Trek, or other treks in the Annapurna region. But still, if pushed too hard trekker might get altitude sickness, which can cause headaches, fatigue, nausea, dizziness, and weakness.
For travelers with limited time, this short Mardi Himal Trek is a great option that takes you above 4,200m. In a short trek duration, trekkers can enjoy the beauty of the Annapurna Himalaya. Mardi Himal Base Camp Trek is a moderate trail with altitude challenges but rich rewards (mountain views, rhododendrons, Gurung culture). The Mardi Himal Trek itinerary can be customized or shortened to a 5 or 6-day trek if needed. With the well-charted Mardi Himal Trek route map and the Mardi Himal Trek cost, this package is excellent, comparable to other Annapurna treks.

Arrival, Welcome, Trek Start
The Mardi Himal Trek begins after you arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. After a meet and greet, the representative staff from Access Nepal Tours and Trekking will bring you to the hotel. After checking into your hotel room, you can rest. Then, you will have a pre-trek meeting with your guide. If you have some final shopping to do, then you can shop around the Thamel area.
In the evening, we gather for a welcome dinner to officially kick off the Mardi Himal Base Camp Trek. The dinner is hosted by Access Nepal Tours and Trekking in a traditional Nepali style, along with cultural performances.
The next morning, we set off for Pokhara in the early morning. It is a 200km drive (6 to 7 hours) from Kathmandu to Pokhara in a private tourist bus. We enjoy relaxing at Pokhara, and tomorrow morning we take another short drive to reach the trailhead of this adventure (Phedi ~800m). The trek to Pothana, the traditional start point of the Mardi Himal trek. We trek, under dense rhododendron forests, following the trekking route through villages like Dhampus and Landruk. On the way, you will meet local farmers and enjoy some glimpses of the mountains.
Your Access Nepal Tours guide will explain the Mardi Himal trek route and distribute a detailed itinerary so you know what to expect each day. Before nightfall, you’ll enjoy dinner at a cozy lakeside hotel in Pokhara or a teahouse en route, then rest for the trek ahead.
Alternative option of drive is taking a 25 minutes flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara with an additional cost. If you are interested, you can inform us in adavcance so we can arrange it accorodingly.
Lodging Options for Mardi Himal Trek
The Mardi Himal Trek package includes a total of 9 days’ accommodation (2 days in Kathmandu and Pokhara and 5 days along the trekking route). The accommodation at teahouses and hotels is standard and comfortable for taking a rest.
In lower elevations (villages like Pothana and Sidhing), rooms have an attached bathroom. But as you climb higher, lodges become more rustic. In Forest Camp, Low Camp, and High Camp, you’ll find simple rooms (often twin beds, warm blankets) and shared facilities. Note that beyond High Camp, there are no overnight lodges; all trekkers sleep at High Camp and do the summit hike at dawn, returning the same day.
- Lodging Style: Typical rooms have twin beds or a double, warm bedding, and electricity (often from solar power). Hot showers and Wi-Fi may be available for a small extra fee (bring Nepali coins for these). Communal dining areas often have a stove or fireplace to keep everyone warm.
- Popular Stops: Many itineraries include nights in Pothana, Forest Camp, Low Camp (Siding), and High Camp. We recommend booking in advance during busy seasons to secure your room, but our team will handle reservations for you.
Note: You can ypgrade the accomodation level but expect limited options (due to remote location of Annapurna region). We suggest you to inform us in advance, if interested in advance so we can arrange it accorodingly.
Meals during the Mardi Himal Trek
In our Mardi Himal Base Camp Trek, we provide 9 breakfasts, 5 lunches, and 9 dinners (including welcome and Farewell). Throughout the trek, you will have full board meals along with seasonal fruits after dinner and 3 cups of tea/coffee.
Breakfast usually features porridge, toast, or eggs, and fresh fruit. Lunch and dinner center on Dal Bhat (the traditional rice-lentil curry), it is nutritious, filling, and often “all you can eat” for trekkers.
Along with Dal Bhat, menus may include noodles, steamed or fried rice, vegetables, momo dumplings, and occasionally pasta or omelets.
- Local Flavors: As you ascend, try Tibetan bread (“kerepe”) with honey or jam, dhal soup, and simple pancakes. Vegetarians and vegans are well catered for, and most teahouses also offer tea, coffee, and hot lemon/ginger drinks (for about $1-3).
- Water: Drinking water is not potable from taps. We advise buying boiled/filtered water from lodges or using purification tablets or a filter. We can also arrange hot water for a small fee if you want to mix instant drinks or meals.
- Extra Treats: Carry some energy bars or small snacks for the trail; at higher camps, snacks and treats cost more. Fruit (apples, oranges) is often available in lodges and provides a healthy boost.
All meals are prepared fresh by local cooks. This means options may be simple, but are hearty. We highlight that enjoying Dal Bhat and other Nepali dishes is part of the Mardi Himal experience. Tea houses charge extra for tea, coffee, eggs, and hot showers, so plan some extra Nepali rupees for those extras. Your package covers the main meals, ensuring you are well-fed and energized each day.
Note: If you have any food allergies or peference, please inform us beforehand to avoid any issues and discomfort.
Best Season for Mardi Himal Trek
The Mardi Himal Trek can be done in any month. As the trek is less crowded, people can trek in any season of the year. The Spring (March-May) and the Autumn (September-November) seasons are the best times to visit the Mardi Himal Trek. Clear skies, mild temperatures, and minimal changes in weather during this time will make the travelers easy to enjoy every moment of the trip.
The Mardi Himal Trek can be traveled at any time of the year. Every season offers a different and new experience on the trek. The summer season (June to August) brings the early sunrise, and majestic views of the mountains can be witnessed.
During the winter season (December to February), the lush green trees and the mountains are replaced by a flake carpet of snow. It will be difficult to walk as the trails will be slippery and layered with cold snow. But with the help of proper trekking shoes, travelling in slippery and snowy routes, these problems can be overcome.
The monsoon is not recommended because the season brings on heavy rain and leeches. The blood sucking parasites are the ones most of the travellers are scared of during the Mardi. During the monsoon season, Poncho raincoats are necessary and important to wear, and especially to stay away from leech situations.
The only time traveling in the rain is beneficial is while walking on stone steps. The muddy pathways during the rainfalls could only make the trek long, and the naturally made stone steps would be easy to travel on.
Temperature and Weather Conditions
Temperatures vary greatly from valley to summit on the Mardi Himal trek. In Pokhara and lower villages, days in spring/fall reach 15-20°C (59-68°F), but nights can drop to 5°C (41°F) or lower. As you climb above 2,500 m, nights are colder (often below freezing near High Camp).
At Mardi Himal Base Camp (4,500 m), daytime peaks are around 5-10°C (41-50°F) in good weather, while nights can fall to -5°C (23°F) or colder. Wind chill in exposed areas can make it feel even colder.
Weather changes quickly in the mountains: a clear morning can turn cloudy or windy by afternoon. You might encounter sudden rain or snow even in spring. Always carry layers (insulated jacket, windbreaker, gloves, hat) and rain gear to handle these shifts. The afternoons often clear up to offer sweeping mountain views of Machhapuchhre, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Dhaulagiri.
Mardi Himal Trek Route Map
The pathways of the Mardi Himal Trek are easy and pretty straightforward, with calm trails and a peaceful environment. Dealing with only a few challenging tracks, with the help of the Mardi Himal Trek map, the trek will be a smooth journey. A decent walk for only 5-6 hours and covering around 10km of distance per day balances the trek. Having a lot of time to rest and just being present with the beautiful surroundings during the journey will make it even more enjoyable.
There are two ways to do this trek. Mardi Himal Trek from Pokhara and Mardi Himal Trek from Kathmandu. First, the journey will start with a drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara. If you are already in Pokhara, then it will be easy for you. We will start the journey with a drive from Pokhara to Phedi in a private vehicle. After having our lunch, we will continue our first hiking day of the trek to Pothana/ Deurali.
The next day, after having our breakfast, we will head towards the low camp and continue to the High Camp the following day. Today we will rest here for the acclimatization. On the fourth day of the Mardi Himal Trek, we will finally summit Mardi Himal. Waking up very early in the morning and starting the journey to the breathtaking peak, you will arrive at the perfect time to glance upon the sun slowly rising from behind the mountains. The texture of the landscape will also change, making the surroundings look very majestic.
After spending some time watching the views and other mountains from the peak, we will descend and stay at the hotel in High Camp. The next day, we will reach Siding, which is a famous scenic village. We will stay here for the night and back to Pokhara the following day.
As the trek is very beautiful and easy, people are capturing the moments and making a Mardi Himal Trek Travel blog, including the vlogs, and are posting them on their social handles, promoting this beautiful place.
Why Mardi Himal Trek? (Mardi Himal Base Camp Trek)
The Mardi Himal Trek is a scenic, lesser-known gem of the Annapurna region. It offers stunning panoramic views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges without the crowds of the more famous ABC or Poon Hill trails. In fact, Mardi Himal is often called a “short and sweet” trek; it’s short enough (10 days) to fit most schedules but delivers breathtaking views.
Your climb takes you through dense rhododendron forests, past traditional Gurung and Magar villages, up grassy ridges lined with prayer flags, and finally to the Mardi Himal Base Camp near 4,500 m. Along the way, enjoy unobstructed sunrise/sunset views of Machhapuchhre (6,993 m) and the entire Annapurna massif. Many trekkers say Mardi Himal feels like a “hidden treasure.” You’ll see high mountains and vast valleys in peaceful seclusion.
Beyond the views, the trek has cultural appeal. You’ll interact with local families in Sidhing, Landruk, and other villages, learn about rural Himalayan life, and see terraced fields and livestock along the trail. With modern teahouses introduced only since 2012, Mardi Himal still feels remote and pure. It’s perfect for beginners who want a moderate climb (max 4500 m) and for returning trekkers looking to avoid crowded paths.
The short Mardi Himal Base Camp Trek has adventure and accessibility: you reach high altitude (over 4 km) in less time, while support from Access Nepal Tours ensures comfort (we arrange permits, guide, porter, etc.). Many travelers fall in love with the majestic Machhapuchhre sunrise and the sense of accomplishment after conquering the easy-access summit point. Your Mardi Himal trek will be inspiring, rejuvenating, and tailor-made to leave you with lasting memories.

The necessary permits which are required for the trek will also be taken care of by us. No transportation cost will be charged. We will provide the pick-up and drop-off service at the Tribhuvan International Airport with a private vehicle. An experienced and qualified tour guide for a group of 6 people and 1 porter for two people.
Travelling from Kathmandu to Pokhara and vice versa, you will be provided with the same vehicle to travel the distance. However, from Pokhara to Deurali and from Siding to Pokhara, we will use public transportation to reach our destination. Here you have to pay a few dollars for the bus fare.
As for the cost of food in the trek, it will gradually increase as we move towards the higher altitudes. We will get similar foods in all our destinations, but the required supplements are difficult to reach the higher altitudes, and the price will also increase. We suggest getting the protein bars and other necessary items from the city itself at a lower price.
How Difficult is the Mardi Himal Trek?
Mardi Himal Trek is a moderately challenging trek in the Annapurna Range. The highest altitude being 4500m and travelling only 5-6 hours per day, the travellers will have much time to breathe in and enjoy the serenity of the trek. Following the Mardi Himal Trek map, the journey will not be hard.
The chances of altitude sickness are also less if we take proper care of ourselves and drink lots of water. Proper food and medications are necessary for the trek. To stay away from the problems and difficulties, be careful with the food and drink a lot of water.
- Fitness Level: Good physical fitness is recommended. Regular cardio training (hiking, cycling, jogging) in the months before the trek will make the experience more enjoyable.

- Daily Distance: Most days are 8-15 km of hiking with 500-900 m elevation gain. Our guides pace the group, and there are plenty of short breaks.
Mardi Himal Trek Altitude Sickness
Mardi Himal trek’s highest point is around 4,500 m (base camp). Some trekkers experience Altitude Sickness (AMS) symptoms as early as 3,000 m. To minimize risk, our itinerary follows a gradual ascent profile with a rest day or short day early on. You should be aware of mild symptoms (headache, nausea, tiredness, loss of appetite). Drinking plenty of water and ascending slowly are key preventive steps.
If mild symptoms occur, our guides will slow the pace, allow rest, and encourage hydration. Diamox (acetazolamide) can be taken as a precautionary medication (consult your doctor before the trek). In the rare case of severe AMS (severe headache, vomiting, confusion), we descend immediately.
Our team is trained in altitude illness recognition, and each trek carries oxygen and a pulse oximeter. Access Nepal Tours’ guides will brief you on acclimatization tips during the trek. Most trekkers who take it easy and stay hydrated enjoy the trek symptom-free.

The locals here have been catching up to the new technology and traditions as well, without forgetting the old and traditional culture and lifestyles. With traditional arts and warm hospitality, old folks and tales, the place feels like heaven over the clouds.
Here, the locals also celebrate almost all the festivals merrily. Fortunately, the major festival, Dashain and Tihar, is celebrated by the locals, fall under the peak season in October-November. If you book your seats for the Mardi Himal Trek, you can also get a chance to visit and celebrate this wonderful festival with them.
Internet, Electricity, and SIM cards in the Mardi Himal Trek
The SIM cards are accessible in the airport, but they are very costly and we do not suggest purchasing them from there. While the SIM cards are cheaper and reliable if you purchase them from the city near the hotel. Two mobile networks are often used by the locals in Nepal. The networks: Ncell and NTC. Both of them are reliable networks and provide good coverage. We suggest purchasing the NTC SIM card for the Mardi Himal Trek, as there is less chance of network coverage from Ncell in this area.
In the lower areas, electricity is often distributed by electricity panels. As we move up towards the upper areas over 3000 meters, the solar panels are used in most of the lodges and guesthouses. The electricity is free in most of the lodges, but some teahouses can charge you NRs100 – NRs150 an hour for the charging stations.
There are internet services in most places in the Mardi Himal Trek, except for the High Camp. As it is situated at a higher altitude, the internet won’t be accessible. For the other places, you can easily access the internet using the data plans, while only some places offer the wifi services. However, the connections are not promised to be as good as in the city areas.

In cases of health issues at higher altitudes, medical expenses, emergency evacuations, loss or theft, trip cancellation, having insurance to cover the expenses will be very beneficial for the travellers.
