Client Arrival & Welcome

As soon as you land in Kathmandu, one of our Access Nepal representatives will be there to greet you at the Tribhuvan International Airport. He/she will take you back to the hotel in Kathmandu from the airport.

Trek preparations, orientation session, and meet & greet will continue in the hotel, making you all set and ready for the Manaslu Tsum Valley trek.

Manaslu Circuit Tsum Valley Trek Route

The Manaslu Circuit Tsum Valley trek route starts from Machha Khola village, which is just a short distance from the village of Arughat. The Manaslu Circuit and Tsum Valley officially begin after a full day’s drive to Machha Khola, and the same path is followed to return.

The path passes through the Budhi Gandaki River, giving you a perfect view of the green hills. Just as you cross a long bridge over the Yaru Khola, you’ll reach Jagat. From this exact moment, the Manaslu restricted area officially begins.

The scenic trail takes you from Jagat to Philim, which is a pretty big village, with great places for having lunch or snacks. We will join the Manaslu Circuit at Deng village as soon as the tour to Tsum Valley concludes.

Chumling village gives the ideal taste of the Tsum Valley culture. And you’ll see plenty of prayer flags, chortens, and a monastery nearby. We travel to Chhokang Paro, also called Chekampar, which is the biggest village of the Tsum Valley. It is situated at an altitude of 3,010 meters (9,875 feet).

We’ll acclimatize at Samagaun, which will be a complete rest day, allowing your body to adjust to the altitude. We start the approach to the Larkya La pass after Samdo. Larke La Pass is definitely one of the highest points of our trekking journey, and this day will be one of the toughest.

Our ascent to Lokpa passes through rhododendrons & pine forests. The moment we enter the Tsum Valley, we will get to see rich Tibetan culture and tradition. The trail also features Mani walls and tons of prayer flags.

One of the main highlights of the trek is the existence of different flora and fauna, ancient monasteries, and the Tibetan lifestyle. To be more specific, we will visit various gompas, including Gumba Lungdang, Mu Gompa, Pungen Gompa, etc.

We will pass through Sama Gaun, Samdo, cross Larkya La Pass, and reach Bimthang. We wrap up our trek by reaching Dharapani and Besisahar. At last, we’ll have a long drive from Dharapani to Besisahar to Kathmandu.

Alongside, there are some other foreign/western items too, including porridge, pancakes, pasta, etc.

For breakfast, there are plenty of options such as porridge, tea, muesli, pancakes, eggs, Tibetan bread, potatoes, chapatis, etc.

Similarly, there are plenty of lunch and dinner options too, including Dal Bhat (rice, lentil & vegetables), momo, thukpa (noodle soup), noodles, chowmein, and many more.

Hot drinks such as ginger tea, milk tea, etc, are also available for added warmth.

Accommodation on the Tsum Valley trek with Manaslu Circuit

Your overall stay in the Tsum Valley trek with Manaslu Circuit will be in basic teahouses. Despite being basic, it includes comfortable rooms with cozy mattresses, pillows, and blankets. These rooms are well-equipped, and in lower-altitude villages, the facilities are good, including electricity and internet services too.

The toilet facilities are also good at the lower elevations, including the western-style toilets. As you go higher, the facilities may be more basic. In higher altitudes, there are high chances of being traditional squat toilets.

Additionally, the bathrooms may also be outside the teahouse. In the villages such as Namrung and Samagaun, the facilities and the teahouses are much better. You’ll find private rooms, attached bathrooms, too, beds are more comfortable, and meals are of higher quality.

It’s best to carry toilet papers and hand sanitizers alongside you.

Besides all of that, the lodges or teahouses of those areas also provide hot showers and the Wi-Fi facility, however, at an extra cost. The cost may be around USD $ 2 to $5 per shower.

What Your Stay at a Teahouse Will Be Like

      • Mostly, the rooms are on a twin-sharing basis, along with two single beds.
      • Beds contain a comfy mattress, a pillow, and a blanket.
      • Mostly, there are shared toilets situated outside the teahouse.
      • There will be no heating inside the rooms.
      • Asian squat-style toilets are the most common in these regions; some may feature Western-style toilets.
      • Water may need to be gathered from the bucket.
      • All the meals are served in the dining hall, including dal bhat, noodles, pasta, etc.
      • The dining hall is heated with a stove, so it is the warmest place in all of the teahouse.

Since the rooms are unheated so the best option is to carry your own sleeping bag for added warmth. Teahouses along the Manaslu Tsum Valley trek are basic and simple yet comfortable and guarantee a good stay.

Drinking Water on the Manaslu and Tsum Valley trek

One of the rules that you’ve to stick to strictly during the Manaslu and Tsum Valley trekking period is drinking enough water and staying hydrated. Hydration is vital when you’re going for high-altitude trekking.

We suggest you carry a water bottle as well as purification tablets. Drink 2 to 3 litres of water every single day. Water purification tablets are easily available in the shops of Thamel.

You should not drink tap water or water from streams in Nepal.

      Manaslu and Tsum Valley Weather

The weather can’t be predicted easily since it lies in the remote region of Gorkha. This is why it is hard to predict the weather. The temperatures are quite mild during the peak trekking season.

Whereas in the summertime, heavy rainfall and monsoon occur in this region, making it extremely tough to trek. In the winter season, cold air blows, and temperatures drop too; extreme cold. Snowfall can also be experienced during this time, making the trail tougher.

Best Time For Manaslu and Tsum Valley Trek

One of the most favourable times to go for the Manaslu and Tsum Valley trek is spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November). During these months, the weather conditions remain ideal with clear skies, lush green landscapes, and crystal clear mountain views.

      March to May (Spring)

The spring season is one of the best times to do the Manaslu Tsum Valley trek. During the months of March to May, the temperatures are milder and perfectly suitable for trekking. The clear weather also allows you to get the best possible views and is ideal for a photography session too.

You’ll also observe rhododendron and wildflower blooming, dense forests, and lush greenery everywhere. Additionally, the daylight hours are also longer during this time, giving you a pleasant atmosphere to catch breathtaking mountain views.

The temperatures are on the modest side during spring, ranging from 10-20°C in the daytime.

      September to November (Autumn)

Not only Spring, but Autumn is also an ideal time for the Manaslu Tsum Valley trek. The sky is the clearest, and you’ll catch stunning mountain panoramas. The trail conditions are safe, too; you’ll get the best of the natural beauty.

The air is quite good, combined with clear skies. You can get the amazing, picturesque views of the Manaslu, Himlung, Ganesh Himal, etc. Stable weather also allows you to make the pass crossings way easier.

In the daytime, the temperature reaches up to 20 degrees. At night, it can drop up to 5 degrees.

We do not recommend this Manaslu Tsum Valley trek in winter and in rainy season, the trail conditions are tough, slippery, and the temperatures are worst too with freezing cold, snowfall, and wind blowing.

Difficulty and Preparation for Manaslu Circuit and Tsum Valley Trek

Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek is a moderate to challenging graded trek. The trek requires some carefulness and a decent level of preparation. It is quite an adventurous journey, as we explore the most remote parts of the Manaslu Circuit and the Tsum Valley trek.

Even though the Manaslu Circuit and Tsum Valley trek is less hard than other popular treks in the Everest and Annapurna regions, you need an adequate level of fitness and should be in good physical shape. During the Manaslu Circuit and Tsum Valley trek, you must walk for around 5 to 7 hours on a daily basis.

When the elevation gains are more significant, we normally walk far less comparatively, around 3 to 4 hours only.

The maximum altitude that this trek goes to is up to 5,160 meters (16,929 ft). Before booking the Manaslu Tsum Valley trek, you must ask yourself: Are you comfortable enough for the multi-day walking?

Apart from that, we strongly demand that you train your body and mind for an extensive duration. The Manaslu Tsum Valley trek is quite a challenging journey where your physical as well as mental strength will be tested to some limit.

Ranked as the ‘difficult’ trek, it includes walking in high altitudes, remote terrain, and for a good amount of duration, making it ideal for trekkers with some amount of experience.

        Main Difficulty Factors

        • First and foremost, the trek goes way above 5000 meters; the following limit gets reached when you surpass the Larkya Pass, located at an altitude of 5,160 meters (16,929 feet). So there is a high chance of Altitude Mountain Sickness (AMS).
        • The duration of the whole trek is 18 days, so it requires great determination and mental resilience throughout the trek.
        • The trail goes through remote regions having only limited accessibility. The facilities may be basic, and the remoteness adds a bit of depth, requiring trekkers to be self-reliant.

        How to Prepare?

Get involved in a fitness training session for several months, and you may also come up with your own fitness routine. You should focus mainly on cardio exercises (hiking, walking up staircases, swimming, cycling, running), and leg-building exercises (mainly on thighs, knees, and calves).

You can practice hiking with a backpack. This allows you to get used to similar scenarios on the trek, carrying some weight. Increasing core strength and endurance is vital since the trek takes you to high altitudes.

Apart from physical preparation, mental preparation is also important. You should be mentally ready to go to a remote terrain and embrace the lifestyle you’re going to follow. You can engage in mindfulness practices, including deep breathing exercises and meditation.

You must make up your mind for the challenges ahead so that the Manaslu Tsum Valley trek becomes smooth and stress-free to some extent.

        Altitude & Acclimatization

Since the Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek takes you to an altitude of over 5000 meters, there is a high chance of getting altitude sickness. Taking care of that, we’ve designed our itinerary in such a way as to follow proper acclimatization.

The only way to avoid altitude sickness is by acclimatizing properly. It can affect anyone, both experienced trekkers with proper fitness and vice versa.

Altitude sickness is a condition that affects you when you try to ascend or climb higher in a quick pace to a higher elevation. This way, your body can’t adjust properly to the lower oxygen levels at the higher altitude.

It usually occurs when you’re at a higher altitude. Thereby, acclimatization is vital, especially when you go above 2500 meters. Don’t worry, we’ll follow gradual elevation gain; this way, the acclimatization process becomes way smoother. And it ultimately reduces the chances of altitude sickness.

        How to Prevent Altitude Sickness?

        • Stay hydrated; drink 2 to 3 litres of water on a daily basis.
        • Eat only healthy and nutritious meals during the trekking duration.
        • Always check for your body’s signs.
        • Don’t neglect the guide’s instructions; follow them in a strict manner.
        • Acclimatize properly and take rest seriously.
        • Don’t drink or smoke during trekking days.
        • Carry a first aid kit, including all the important medications.

Wonderful Tsum Valley and Manaslu Circuit trip with Access Nepal Oct 2017 • Friends A friend and I recently completed the Tsum Valley and Manaslu Circuit 26-day trip with Access Nepal. From the beginning to the very end of the trip our travel advisor, Sadhana Adhikari, proved very helpful with all our many questions. Every detail was taken care of from our arrival in the Kathmandu airport to our final dinner the last night of our stay. We were well taken care of during the entire trek by our guide Om Prakash Lamichhhane and porter Deepak Magar. A good example of going the distance (literally!) to provide for us was on several occasions after completing our day’s trek, Prakash walked a day ahead and back to arrange lodging when it appeared that rooms in tea houses could possibly be filled before our arrival there. We also felt extremely grateful for our superb driver, Prakash Pokharel, who somehow safely maneuvered us on very long and rough drives to a Tsum Valley trailhead and back to Kathmandu. Even the tour day in Kathmandu proved fantastic with our very knowledgeable guide, Kiran Bhatta, who filled the day with wonderful stops and a breadth of information on the culture of Nepal. I would definitely recommend the company Access Nepal; their dependable staff helped us feel that were in great hands for the duration of our time in their country.

Tsum Valley and Manaslu Trek Oct 2019 • Solo I did the Tsum Valley and Manaslu Trek through Access Nepal and it was an amazing experience! I am so thankful to my guide, Navaraj Wagle, for making this trip so special as I trusted him completely and truly enjoyed his (and my porter Deepak Majar) company. Throughout the trek, I met a number of different guides and each time I was so happy and grateful that I was with Navaraj. As a 30 year old women travelling alone, I always felt very safe with Navaraj and knew he was looking out for me. I also appreciated that he tailored the trek based on conditions encountered/what made sense instead of always just following the itinerary as this really improves the experience. If you are thinking of trekking in Nepal, I would definitely recommend Navaraj as a guide! Additionally, Sadhana was very helpful and I thought that the trip was laid out well. It was perfect that so many of the details were accounted for so I basically just had to show up and go.

Manaslu Circuit and Tsum Valley Oct 2019 • Couples Purushottam (Puru) from Access Nepal was an excellent guide for our trek of Manaslu Circuit and the Tsum Valley. He was able to modify our original itinerary always for the better to find us quieter and in my opinion better tea houses and towns to stay in. This also helps to disperse tourist dollars amongst more tea house owners and not just those in the busy towns stopped in on most standard itineraries. This gave us a better experience being able to interact more with the family who owns the tea house as well. Puru also helped us choose rewarding, very scenic and challenging side trips that were less commonly visited by trekkers and within our abilities. Oftentimes these trips required a full day trek in areas without a teahouse available for lunch so Puru backed us satisfying picnic lunches. On the last night of our trek Puru even planned me a birthday party including a beautiful cake from a local bakery, Marigold flower necklases, and dancing to Nepalese music. Our very musically skilled porter even played me Happy Birthday on his flute that was hand made out of a trekking pole! I was able to totally relax on this trip realizing early on that Puru and his team would take care of everything. Sadhana was also very pleasant to interact with over email responding very quickly to our many questions and coming to our hotel before our trek to walk us through the details and answer more of our questions. Highly recommend Access Nepal.
