Kori Trek Route
The Kori Trek begins with a drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara. The drive will be around 6 to 7 hours, passing through several rivers, forests, and scenic views along the journey. After that, on the next day, another drive follows up from Pokhara to Sikles, this time it will be of only 3 hours.
Sikles is a gorgeous Gurung village situated in the Kaski district, where you can enjoy the stunning mountain vistas and authentic natural beauty. After spending some time in Sikles village, we march forward to Hugu Goth.
Kori Himal trekking starts from here (Up to the Sikles village; we only travelled with the help of a vehicle). In Hugu Goth, you’ll see plenty of Goth Ghars (huts of the shepherds). It is basically a summer grazing settlement used by the Gurung people of Sikles village.
Following that, we march to Nohtha; it will be a steep uphill climb journey crossing the Hugu Khola. Situated at an altitude of 3,000 meters (9,842 feet), Nohtha is one of the famous stopover points for trekkers heading towards the Kori Danda.
After trekking for around 5 to 6 hours from Hugu Goth, you will reach Nohtha. This area includes grazing grasslands for yak and sheep herds. If you’re lucky, you might even spot the Himalayan Thar, musk deer, and the Lophophorus.
The next day will be an important day as we will take an ascent to the Kori Danda viewpoint, which is also the highest point of this Kori Himal trek. The panorama visible from Kori Danda is what can be expressed as nature at its peak form.
The sights of humongous peaks of Lamjung Himal (6,988 m), Annapurna II (7,937 m), Machhapuchhare Mount Fishtail (6,993 m), and Manaslu Himal (8,156 m) can be seen clearly, and you can take pictures of these awe-inspiring views.
After exploring the Kori Hill and the surroundings, the descent journey begins, the same pathway to Sikles village. Afterwards, you’ll take a drive from Sikles to Pokhara and the same for Pokhara to Kathmandu.
In between, you’ll get fascinating views, including dense forests, multiple streams, rivers, and waterfalls, adding more excitement to the road trip.
The Kori Hill trek will be a combination of both ascent and descent trails. You’ll surpass dense jungles, scenic waterfalls, learn about the indigenous culture, and receive warm hospitality at the same time.
Exploring the Kori Himal trek gives a mix of thrill, adventure, and gives you the opportunity to experience the wild beauty of the Annapurna region.
Alternative Trekking Route
Moving to the Kori Danda trek, you’ll see alternative trekking routes that ultimately lead to Syange. And makes it all the way to the Annapurna Circuit. Along the path, you will discover a famous lake, Dudh Pokhari Lake.
One of the highlights of this lake is its milky appearance, making it unique and holding a special religious significance, too. It is seen as a holy site for the Hindus and Buddhists. Many claim that bathing in this lake makes the wishes true and purifies sins.
People often visit Dudh Pokhari during the Janaipurnima festival, which usually falls around the month of September. In fact, it is located on the upper right side of the Kori Hill viewpoint. The trekkers will experience a new dimension, adding spiritual value and a peaceful restoration after the long journey.
People and Culture of this Region
This region has been inhabited mostly by the people of the Gurung and Ghale castes/ethnic from several decades. They practice Buddhism and Bon Po traditions, which are two unique yet quite related spiritual traditions.
Bon is more of an older religion and shares several similarities with Buddhism. When Buddhism came later, it largely replaced Bon to some extent and absorbed many of the teachings of Bon. Gurung and Ghale communities share unique cultures and languages, which you can experience during this Kori trek.
Mountain Sights from Kori Danda Trek
There are plenty of mountain views that you can see during the Kori Danda trek. Here is the list of all of them:
- Lamjung Himal (6988m/22926ft)
- Annapurna II (7937m/26040ft)
- Annapurna IV (7525m/
- Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) (6993m/22942ft)
- Manaslu Himal (8156m/26758ft)
Flora and Fauna on the Kori Trek
In between the trail lies oak and rhododendron forests, along with exotic wildlife. Trekkers moving along this path will get to experience stunning blooming rhododendron in red, pink, and white colours (mostly visible during the spring season).
Plenty of bird sightings are also very much evident in this place, including Himalayan monal (also called Lophophorus), pheasants, eagles, and woodpeckers. Musk deer, monkeys, and red pandas can also be visible, but you need to be lucky enough to spot them on the trekking path. This Himalayan biodiversity adds a different dimension and beauty to the trek.

Drinking Water on the Kori Trek

We advise you to carry a water bottle with you, along with some water purification tablets. You can easily buy it at one of the shops in Thamel.
Refill your bottles at one of the teahouses or homestays, or you can even do that from natural water sources; however, only do that after proper consultation with your guide.
Don’t fill from any natural water sources you see. And make sure to purify it before drinking.
Internet Facilities Available on the Kori Trek
Internet services will be available at some of the teahouses you stay but may not be available in higher-altitude areas. You can communicate and get in touch with your friends and families in between the trails.
To use the Wi-Fi services you might have to pay extra charges from USD $2 to $4. The teahouse owner is responsible for providing you the internet services and he/she charge you accordingly.
Communication During Trekking
NTC and Ncell are the popular network providers in Nepal and during the journey the mobile network coverage will also be quite satisfactory. You can simply buy a local SIM card (either NTC or Ncell) from the local store in Kathmandu.
When you reach areas that have poor Wi-Fi connection you can buy a data package too. This way you’ll remain connected all the time.
Difficulty of the Kori Trek
The Kori Trek is graded as moderately challenging and is perfectly suitable for beginners and experienced trekkers.
Although the climbs are pretty uphill but it isn’t that hard compared to the Everest or Annapurna treks. The main final ascent to the Kori hill is the only tough section that will test your endurance a bit.
If you’re trekking in the winter season, the trail surfaces can get slippery and increase the difficulty. Otherwise, only the basic fitness level is enough for the Kori trek in Nepal.
The trek isn’t too technical, either, requiring technical gear like ropes or ice axes. Beginners can go on this trek without thinking much, as no huge climbing or high-altitude experience is needed. Only a decent amount of physical preparation is enough.
Weather conditions can’t be predicted easily, especially in high-altitude treks, but as long as you prepare right, nothing can go wrong. Even in the worst possible cases, your guide will be alongside you to help & rescue you.
You’ve to walk for around 6 to 7 hours on a daily basis.
Altitude and Acclimatization
One of the main risks that can hinder your Kori trek experience is altitude sickness. Altitude sickness is when your body reacts to low oxygen levels at higher altitudes. Generally, when you ascend too quickly, not allowing your body to adapt to the conditions in a better manner, increases the risks of altitude sickness.
Although it isn’t worrisome as compared to other high-altitude treks because the maximum we reach for this Kori Danda trek is 3800 meters. Having said that, there will be few amount of thin air as you surpass the 3000 meters of elevation.
The elevation we reach isn’t that much of a worry sign; however, you need to be cautious if you experience any of these symptoms. These include headache, nausea, dizziness, and sleep difficulties.
How to prevent altitude sickness during the Kori Trek?
Altitude sickness can be prevented by acclimatizing. Acclimatization is the process of becoming used to the new conditions or altitudes. Proper acclimatization and rest ensure your body adapts to the low oxygen levels successfully and thus reduces the chances of altitude sickness.
Tips on Making the Kori Himal Trek Successful
Here are some of the things you need to keep in mind:
- When you reach an altitude of 3,000 meters, don’t walk more than 500 meters in a day.
- Stay hydrated; drink 3-4 liters of water daily.

- Sleep for 7 to 8 hours daily.
- Keep checking your body reactions during the trek. If you notice something unusual, start descending.
