Overview

The Jomolhari Trek is an 11 Day adventure into the remote Himalayas of Bhutan. This trek takes you to the base camp of holy Mt. Jomolhari (7,326 m/ 24,035 ft). Trekking through the vast ranges and into pristine wilderness is the heart of this trek.

The Jomolhari Trek shows you the beauty of nature, untouched by urbanization and globalization. Bhutan is the only remaining country in Asia that is carbon-negative. This means 70% of the landmass is forested. The Trek to Jomolhari is a pure adventure that makes you trek through verdant pine and rhododendron forests, alpine meadows, and windswept glacial valleys.

In this 11-day Jomolhari Trek package, trekkers can see close-up views of Himalayan giants like Jomolhari, Jichu Drake, and many other 6,000 to 7,000 m plus peaks. The Jomolhari Trek route passes through remote valleys and peaceful Bhutanese villages like Thangthangka, Soe, Doongochang, and Lingzhi.

As you trek deep inside Bhutan, you can feel that time has stopped. The religion shines brightest as you can find every corner decorated with prayer flags and chortens.

Similarly, the advantages of trekking Autumn is crisp mountain air and breathtaking mountain views. The weather gets more stable, and temperatures are ideal, not too warm nor too cold.

It is best to avoid trekking in the summer and winter. During the summer/monsoon (June to August ), Bhutan experiences frequent rain and fog. Similarly, winter (December to February) is very cold. High passes are usually closed in winter due to heavy snow.

All required accommodation during the Jomolhari Trek is included in the package. Trekkers will stay in 3 stars hotel at Paro and Thimpu. During the trek, you sleep in four-season mountain tents (double-wall, with a waterproof fly) that are spacious enough for two people. These expedition‑grade tents are engineered for gale-force winds and sub-zero temperatures, so you’ll stay warm and dry at camp.

Inside, you’ll have foam sleeping pads provided (you may rent or bring your own inflatable pad). At each site, we also pitch a separate dining tent with folding tables and chairs. This is where we serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner in warmth and comfort. For sanitation, we set up a private toilet tent at every night’s camp.

Our staff provides hot boiled water twice daily (morning and evening) so you can wash up and stay clean. (Outside of camp, Bhutan’s campsites are chosen to be scenic and quiet, but they are basic mountain camps, with no showers or electricity on trek.)

Before and after the trek, you stay in comfortable 3‑star hotels in Paro and Thimphu. These lodgings blend traditional Bhutanese style with modern amenities (private bathroom, heat, Wi‑Fi, laundry service). In this way, you get a restful night in civilization both before heading into the wild and after you return.

Food Options during the Jomolhari Trek

Nutritious and healthy food is a key part of high-altitude trekking, like the Jomolhari Trek. We provide three full meals a day, freshly cooked by our expert trekking chefs. Every meal is balanced (carbohydrates, proteins, fats) and prepared from fresh ingredients, no pre-packaged or overly processed foods. Typically, our menu is:

  • Breakfast: Rolled oats or porridge (with dried fruits/honey), eggs (any style), fresh bread, and cheese or honey. This slow-burning breakfast fuels your morning hike.
  • Hot Trail Lunch: We serve a warm hot-lunch on the trail (often pasta, rice, or potatoes with vegetables and protein) rather than cold sandwiches, so you refuel with hearty food mid-hike. For example, grilled chicken with rice or vegetable curry with noodles is common. These complex carbs give sustained energy.
  • Dinner: Evening meals start with a warm soup or broth (light but nutrient‑rich), which is especially important at altitude for hydration and digestive comfort. The main course then features lean protein (chicken, yak, or lentils) and fiber‑rich vegetables (beans, greens, carrots, etc.) along with rice or noodles. Dessert might be fresh fruit or a simple cake. We drink plenty of water, hot tea, or local coffee with every meal.

Unlimited boiled water and electrolyte drinks are available throughout the day to keep you well-hydrated. Our chefs follow strict hygiene and food-safety standards. (Special diets, vegetarian, vegan, halal, gluten-free, can be accommodated if requested in advance.) In short, you’ll eat very well: our catering is designed to boost energy and aid acclimatization, as advised by high-altitude nutrition experts.

Is Travel Insurance Mandatory for Jomolhari Trek?

Travel insurance is not mandatory for the Jomolhari Trek package. Though Bhutan does not have mandatory insurance, it is highly recommended.

Purchase a comprehensive insurance policy that must cover medical emergencies, helicopter evacuation, and trip cancellation. Make sure your insurance explicitly covers high-altitude trekking (above 13,000 ft) and emergency rescue.

Having insurance gives you peace of mind and security as well. Your insurance will cover hospitalization costs, emergencies, and evacuation. For more detailed information regarding choosing what to look for when getting insurance, read this blog: travel insurance.

Bhutan Permits and Entry

Bhutan’s government requires every foreign tourist to have a valid visa and special trek permits. We handle all these formalities for you: once you confirm the booking, our Bhutan office will arrange your visa and trekking permits. The Bhutan visa fee (approximately $40) is paid upfront and is included in your package.

Trekking permits (Jomolhari Special Permit and Jigme Dorji National Park permit) will be issued in Paro just before the trek, and your guide will carry them each day. You must carry these permits at all times on the trail, as checkpoints in the mountains will check them.

No one is allowed to trek solo in Bhutan; a licensed Bhutanese guide must accompany you on this route. By using our package, all paperwork is arranged smoothly and legally so you can focus on the adventure.

If you want to trek in Bhutan, and besides the Jomolhari trek, another popular Bhutan Trek package is the Druk Path Trek.

Altitude Sickness & Prevention during the Jomolhari Trek

The Jomalhari Trek has a risk of altitude sickness. Its route takes us over 4,000+m altitude. To prevent altitude sickness, Access Nepal Tours and Trekking’s Jomolahari Trek itinerary follows “Climb High, Sleep Low” rules.

The altitude gain is gradual and goes steadily. The itinerary includes acclimatization days at Jangothang. This gives your body extra time to adjust to high elevation.

During the Jomolhari Trek, if you feel any of these symptoms, such as headache, dizziness, nausea, and fatigue, inform your guide immediately.

To prevent altitude sickness among trekkers, we climb slowly, drink lots of water throughout the trek, eat carbohydrate-rich meals, and avoid alcohol and smoking. If you have any health concerns or issues, consult with your doctor about taking acetazolamide (Diamox).

Moreover, we provide highly experienced, first-aid trained, and licensed guides for this trek. In case of emergencies, we immediately arrange a helicopter evacuation.

Important Note: If you follow isntructed safety guideline there is a very low chance of getting altitude sickness. During the trek, do not over push you body. Listen to your guides, walk in a group, pay attention to your body: rest when needed, eat regularly, and drink plenty of fluids.
