Permits Required for Gokyo Lake Trek

Do I need a permit for Gokyo Lake Trek?

Yes, you will need two permits for the Gokyo Lake Trek. They are the Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit and the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit. If you are trekking with Access Nepal, all the process and cost of the permits will be handled by the company.

Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit:

You can get a Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit easily from the Nepal Tourism Board office in Kathmandu or at the park entrance in Monjo.

Cost of Permit:

  1. For foreign nationals: $30 US dollars (3,000 NPR)

  2. For SAARC nationals: $15 US dollars (1,500 NPR)

  3. For Nepali citizens: Free of cost (registration is required)

Note: Always carry the permits with you because you have to show them at different checkpoints and to enter the Sagarmatha National Park. In some cases, you might have to pay additional government charges, too.

Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit:

You can get a Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality permit at the Lukla checkpoint or at checkpoint of Monjo. The cost of the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality permit is around $20 US dollars (2,000 NPR). This permit is necessary to enter the Everest region.

TIMS Card (Not Needed):

For the Gokyo Lake trek, you won’t need a Trekkers’ Information Management System (TIMS) card. The Khumbu Pasang permits can work as a TIMS card, unlike other areas where a TIMS card is mandatory.

Key Tips:

  • Always carry the permits with you because you have to show them at checkpoints.

  • Carry a copy of your passport and passport-sized photos in case you lose your permits or want to reissue them.
